Do mercury thermometers last longer than other thermometers?

Are mercury thermometers affected by "wind chill"?

  • I have a mercury thermometer outside and its reading 2 degrees Celsius right now. Strange thing is that the weather station that is close to our areas elevation in my city says 4.9 degrees C and feels like 1 C (cause of wind chill). So are mercury thermometers affected by wind chill? Or do they read exactly the air temperature?

  • Answer:

A thermometer measures the air temperature. If the temperature is 2°C it will be 2°C whether the wind is blowing at 5knots or 55knots. Wind chill is a subjective assessment of what the temperature feels like to a human when the wind is blowing. Wind chill is completely negated by putting clothes on. Wind chill tells you nothing about the temperature or the wind. I've worked in the Antarctic twice and on neither expedition did anyone ever mention wind chill because it is irrelevant.
