Why is the sky lighter at night when it is snowing?

  • Having been trying to get to sleep last night, I found the light bothering me. It was brighter than a normal night with no snow. Pretty, yes, but it got me thinking. My theory is that the white reflects any IR rays are emitted, and then the reflected IR rays reflect off the clouds, too. So what's your theory, or do you actually know why it is brighter? Thank you and enjoy the snow (if you have it)! :) x

    A lot of fools are out today. Of course you can see the sky when it snows, just like you can when it rains. The sky is anything above ground level. Snow is a great reflector, so any form of light, whether its partial moonlight or street lights it illuminates the night sky.

I think you are spot on. The white snow is a good reflector of light, so when light gets reflected upwards onto the clouds, they appear brighter than normal.

There are no clouds when it snows. Clouds hide the reflected light from the moon making it darker, so if there are no clouds, you'll see the light reflected off the moon making it brighter

its not the sky thats brighter its the snow reflecting the city lights or whatever lights there are near.X)
