What colour is the sky when...?
-
I have been told that when a tornado is around, the sky is supposed to be green. So... what shade of green should I be looking for? is it pale or bright green, or so obvious that you can't miss it?

Answer:
The color of the sky in the vicinity of a tornado, other than being black (because radient illumination is blocked by the density), depends primarily on what materials have already been lifted up and thrown around. A lot of water may reflect green. A lot of dust may reflect gray. Coal dust out of a coal pile would enhance the black. Water Spouts (twisters on lakes or rivers) look bluish grey to whiteish.

it can be like a pea green, or a jade green. The sky won't always be green though

sea green, is one way to look at it. You will be able to tell, because it will not be a normal color. By that time you also do not want to be outside anyway. Get in and get ready for the storm....

The green comes from a reflection of the grass (and trees, etc.), and it CAN happen--but doesn't always mean a tornado is emminent. It often is associated with a tornado however. It's like a paler version of the green of grass. The sunlight comes from in front of the clouds, and reflects up into the storm, which is too big and deep to allow the sunlight (now having absorbed most of the color spectrum except the reflected green) to escape through the water. The green is then diffused "under" the storm cloud. When you first see it, you'll remember it.

if it turns green, the side of the cloud might be dark green

Ok first off, when a tornado comes, the sky does not turn green. Take it wiht someone with experience. The sky is very dark, like pitch black. But then again, the tornado I saw looked just like a big cloud.

I've never heard of it that the sky turns green at all. Unless you're watching it with "Green-Goggles"on.

All the experience I've had with tornado's have been is that, the clouds turn black dark and can consum the whole sky. Or be one dark cloud with a funnel coming out of it and the clear sky around it would be a pale amber.
