Why Cumulus Clouds Rarely Form In Summer Over Lake Okeechobee During Daylight Hours?

Cumulus clouds do they bring rain and snow or are they fair weather clouds?

  • 4th grade science question Cumulus clouds usually A. Bring snow and rain B. Occur in the winter months C. Occur in fair weather D. Form hail. I guess C my daughter says A HELP!

  • Answer:

It depends entirely on the size of the cumulus cloud. Small cumulus is often called "fair weather cumulus" but if the atmosphere is more unstable, cumulus can develop depth and produce rain showers (or snow showers if the conditions are right). If the cumulus continues to develop it can become cumulonimbus. This is seen in the cloud classification used in weather SYNOP messages Low level cloud type 1 is cumulus of small vertical extent type 2 is cumulus of large vertical extent type 3 is cumulonimbus without an anvil type 9 is cumulonimbus with an anvil Cumulus type two and the two cumulonimbus clouds produce showers. Both A and C are right although A should be "showers of snow and rain" rather than "snow and rain".
