How to tell if a tsunami is coming?

Can you tell if a tsunami is coming?

  • I have been getting these weird dreams of being in a tsunami and i'm so interested in knowing about them. so i was wondering (because i like going to the beach which is in California which is by the pacific ocean) if you can tell if a tsunami is coming before it actualy happens. like you can tell the weather can't you tel if a tsunami comes?

  • Answer:

You can from earthquake reports. There are many places on the web that have instant earthquake reports, and any out at sea can produce underwater landslides, and those trigger tsunamis. So if you see a massive earthquake in the ocean, start to worry about tsunamis. I know Yahoo Widgets has a good earthquake indicators. If you are out in California, anywhere in the Pacific can trigger one.

Water recedes...generally. You really can't tell. If the quake is close to you you may not have those warning signs. If you feel a quake.....get away from the water....to be safe.

Of course you can tell, you never feel the ringing in your head right before the tsunami's come?

If the tide falls way down very quickly, and retreats into the ocean over 500 yards, head for high ground immediately.

The usual sign is when the water goes away from the beach quickly -- much faster than a tide going out. That gives you about 1 minute to RUN!! But most tsunamis are only a few feet high.

If you're in the water, and the water level drops significantly, and rapidly, you're pretty much screwed.

If the earth shakes and the water recedes run like hell.....

It depends on where you are, what triggered the tsunami, and what other conditions are like. In California tsunamis or tidal waves are most likely to be triggered by an earthquake happening in the ocean. Land-based earthquakes don't have the same effect. The further away the earthquake occurs the longer it will take the tsunami to get to you. The good news is that there are warning systems in the Pacific Ocean that are monitored by NOAA and tsunamis aren't that frequent in North America. The bad news is that the warnings don't always come fast enough or people don't hear them or know what to do. There is generally an outflow of water before the tsunami comes, it will appear to be low tide or a receding of water as the wave swells. Birds and other wildlife have been observed top note these coming and try to go in the opposite direction.

The way to tell if a Tsunami is coming is when a tide pulls back more than 50 ft. When you see that, get your necessary items and get as far away from it as possible. However, if you're on an island when you see the first signs of a Tsunami, run to the very top floor of a hotel or any multi-story building that isn't closed. Remain there until rescue effort arrives.
