When and where does convectional rain occur?

Where in the UK does "convectional" and "relief" rain occur?

  • I need to be able to pin-point main areas on a map, all help appreciated. :)

  • Answer:

Relief rain occurs on the windward sides of mountains. In UK the western sides of mountains are wetter. Wales and the Scottish highlands are good examples. East of these mountains there is often a much warmer area, because the air descends at the dry adiabatic lapse rate, after rising at the saturated adiabatic lapse rate. ( the DALR is approximately twice the SALR) Convectional rain can occur anywhere where the ground heats enough to push air parcels to the condensation level. Cumuliform clouds form, which give showers often in the afternoon.
