What causes change in air temperature?

  • & also what changes water temperature at the beach? I do have some info but I'm just asking in case anyone else can help me :) Thank you! PS-Links would be really helpful too.

    Air temperature changes due to a number of things. Time of Day- during the day the sun is shining and warming up the atmosphere, but when it's cloudy the atmosphere won't heat up as much as it would with the sun. During the night, if the sky is clear, all the heat from the sun will escape back out into space and cool the temperature off. When it's cloudy the heat can't leave the earth. Time of year- during the winter in most places the land is cooler than the ocean. So a land breeze (offshore flow of wind) will develop and keep the air warmer in coastal areas than inland areas. During the summertime, it's the opposite. An onshore flow of wind or a sea breeze develops and keeps the temp. lower in coastal areas than inland areas. Fronts- mostly cold and warm fronts change air temperature. A front is a boundary between two air masses. When a cold front moves through, a cold airmass is taking the place of a warm airmass and the temperature will become cooler. During a warm front, a warm airmass takes the place of a cold airmass and the temperature becomes warmer. Water temperature takes longer to chnage temperature significantly than land because land cools off faster than water. The water cools off due to a prolonged period of a certain temperature range. Meaning, during the winter, there's a prolonged period of cold weather so, the ocean will cool off eventually by about February. During the summer, it will warm up due to a prolonged of heat. It usually reaches its warmest temp around mid-September.

If you take the case of a particular place,the change in air temperature depends upon cloudiness,prevailing winds which bring hot or cold air of the adjacent places,proximity to sea surface which brings cold air through sea-breeze,whether it is an urban or rural area etc. If you take the case of two different places,apart from the above mentioned reasons,the change in temperature depends upon the latitude,altitude,nature of soil and slope of the place.

After reading these answers above, maybe we can say that anything which blocks sunlight can lower temperature. Also any movement of the planet in such a way as to expose one part closer to the sun, or to move more toward the sun if the orbit is not exactly circular (I forget, but think maybe not) then also can change air temperature by increasing the amount of heat received by the sun's rays. Once there is heat in the planet, that heat can be carried by air currents or water currents. Movement of air can bring heat from one place to another. Clouds are just one obstacle to the passage of heat. Still, the clouds do not make a total insulating layer. They do allow some light and heat to filter in and then leak outward (away from the earth)...
