What are all the different types of clouds?

Are there different types of clouds?

  • If there, please mention the types. Also please give me the web address of the site which has good information on clouds Thank you.

  • Answer:

I have been teaching meteorology to aviators for many years. The books we are using show all the clouds with photos. But you must remember this: Clouds don't have names; people give names to the clouds and two different observers may call the same cloud with two different names because there is no definite boundary between their types. However meteorology usually divide them into three classes: The cumuliform clouds. Those are the result of a convection, i.e. rising air. They are the cumulus, cumulonimbus, alto-cumulus, etc. Usually they are made of water droplets and perhaps some ice crystals. The stratiform clouds. Those are often the result of the opposite, an inversion. That happens when the air above is warmer than under. Those clouds are typically flat and uniform. Those are the stratus, stato-cumulus, alto-stratus and also, fog! The cirriform clouds. Those are found on the top of our troposphere. They are made entirely of ice crystals and are the "left-overs" of many convections from air rising either in a cyclone or along a polar front. They are thin hair-like clouds such as the cirrus, cirro-stratus, etc.

The World Meteorological Organisation recognises ten basic cloud types in three layers. These are: Low Level Cloud Stratus (St) Stratocumulus (Sc) Cumulus (Cu) Cumulonimbus (Cb Middle Level Cloud Altocumulus (Ac) Altostratus (As) Nimbostratus (Ns) High Level Cloud Cirrus (Ci) Cirrostratus (Cs) Cirrocumulus (Cc) For weather reporting the basic cloud types are expanded to 9 Low, 9 Middle and 9 High level clouds. The low level clouds are 1. Cumulus of small vertical development 2. Cumulus of large vertical development 3. Cumulonimbus that has not developed an anvil 4. Stratocumulus formed by the spreading out of Cumulus 5. Stratocumulus 6. Stratus of fair weather 7. Stratus of bad weather 8. Cumulus and Stratocumulus with bases at different levels 9. Cumulonimbus with an anvil. There are similarly codified clouds in the Middle and High groups. As well as the 27 coded clouds there are other clouds such as wall clouds, shelf clouds, roll clouds, pileus caps and mammatus that can be observed and reported if necessary.

The four main types of clouds are cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and cumulonimbus. There over 100 types of clouds that are different types of the ones that I mentioned. This link has some pretty good information: http://www.srh.weather.gov/srh/jetstream/synoptic/clouds_max.htm
