What happens when lightning strikes in the ocean?

What happens when lightning strikes the ocean and you're swimming in it?

  • Do you die because I heard electricity travels through water. And do all the fish in the ocean die too?

  • Answer:

It depends on how close you are. If you are only a couple feet away, you will probably be electrocuted. If you're a few hundred feet away, you'll be fine. Electricity does not travel indefinitely in water, or in anything else for that matter. Also, keep in mind that the human body is more than 70% water, so you'll boil a bit on land if you get struck, too. Sidebar: My friend's patio was struck by lightning last week while we were standing on it. We were no more than 9 feet away from the strike point. Neither of us felt anything, but our ears were sure ringing from the thunderclap!

That's a good question. I know that they use some sort of electrical device when doing inventory of fish populations. They shock the fish without killing them and eventually release them. Electricity cannot travel through water, per say, but rather transfers through the ions in the salt. So fresh water isn't as much of a harm, the electricity is only lethal within about 900 feet. But if you are in the ocean, that deadly distance can be up to 5 miles. If you even hear thunder, get out of the water, then you don't have to worry about it.

The average strike of lightning will only kill any living things from a 5 mile radius of where the lightning struck, the lighting ussualy doesn't travel further then that. Hope I helped :]
