How long does it take for cloth diapers to dry inside?

  • I'm pregnant and planning on cloth diapering. I don't have a washer or dryer so I will be doing them by hand. I realized today I might need to take into consideration how long it will take to dry them to figure out how many diapers I need to buy. I'm intending on using pockets. How long does it take to dry a pocket diaper indoors at around 70 degrees Fahrenheit? Same question for AIOs, flats, and covers? Also how long does it take to dry a typical microfiber insert?

  • Answer:

It would take less than one day for the shell of a pocket diaper to dry hanging inside the house. The microfiber insert could take up to two days or longer. The shell would be easy enough to get clean by hand, but you might find the microfiber to be a bit more difficult to clean and chaffing on your hands. AIOs would take up to four days to dry hanging inside the house. They tend to be more difficult to get thoroughly clean and I would imagine that they would not work quite as well if washed by hand. Covers are extremely easy to wash by hand and dry very fast (within a few hours). Since the prefold, fitted or flat would keep the poo and pee in the diaper, the cover will rarely get dirty. In fact, covers are typically used several times in one day and hung to dry in between each use until they become soiled. So you need far less covers than absorbent diapers. Usually about 4 to 6 covers and 24 to 30 prefolds, flats or fitteds. If you plan to wash these diapers by hand, my highest recommendation goes to flats and covers. The flats are one large piece of cloth which makes them extremely easy to wash by hand and they would be dry within 24 hours. You can buy "Flour Sack Towels" at Wal-mart at 5 for $5 for an economical diaper that tends to be larger than most commercially made flats. If you're feeling extra crafty, you can always get some fabric dye and tie dye them to add some extra flare. There are a lot of different ways to fold a flat including trifolding and just laying in a cover. If you plan to fold the diaper into one of the diaper shape folds like the "origami fold", simply use a snappi or pins to secure the diaper before closing the cover. We have been cloth diapering for the last 15 months and I have tried every cloth diaper system. I prefer to keep my waterproof layer separate from my absorbent layer because you never know when the waterproof layer is going to give up and be toast. I'd rather toss one or two covers than 20 whole pocket diapers or AIOs. I also love cotton diapers! They are so much more absorbent than microfiber and require so much less work to keep clean. Take care and good luck!
