What's the contract job?

Has anyone walked away from a 1 year contract midway?

  • I was hired to cover a maternity contract for one year. The job is a great job and I enjoy it, but it is clear that the job is not mine and that there is no room for me to stay within the company, as the department is very small. The women who I am replacing is also very close to the current employees and maintains regular contact. She is spoken of daily, my office is referred to as her office etc etc. I have heard hints that she may come back early, but I do not know this for sure. At a leaving do, my boss openly told her in front of me that if she wants to come back early just call. Perhaps I am too sensitive, but the bottom line is I would like to find a new job. i feel slightly guilty about doing this despite the fact my contract says that it can be terminated by either party by giving two weeks notice. i am currently into my sixth month of the one year contract. Not sure what to do. I guess I should say- I realize that it is her job, and I know that I was contracted to tdo the job for a full year, but my circumstances have changed as well, and I would like some stability in my life. I feel like I should move on. I can't afford to wait for her to decide when to come back and then have them only give me two weeks notice before I am due to leave. I do feel horrible, but I also think I neeed to do whats best for me.
