Can an LPN be a travel nurse?

Is it possible to be a travel nurse when your a single mom of 1 child?

  • I would like to hear from any nurse who is or knows other travel nurses who are mothers. I know all of the facts of going about to be a travel nurse. I am currently a nurse assistant in the float pool at a hospital, Im going to school now for my ADN and would love to be a traveling nurse but I don't know if its possible with a child! My daughter will be 5 when I graduate and her father isnt in her life. So, Im thinking I could possibly travel when she's out of school for the summer and possibly put her in a camp wherever Im assigned to work for 3 months? I dont know if its possible to bring a child along, just looking for ideas on how I could make it work out if there's any.

  • Answer:

Hi there. I'm an RN. I've never done travelling, but I know people who have. First thing, most travel companies require at least a couple years experience before hiring you. The reason for that is that a travel nurse is expected to hit the floor running and there is considerable learning curve for new nurses. I don't know any travel nurse that had young children. Not saying that it couldn't be done, I just haven't met any. You can take contracts for shorter terms (like 6 weeks) but you would be responsible for finding child care. But if your daughter will be 5 when you get your ADN, she will be at least 7-8 before you would have the minimum experience to be hired as a travel nurse. Good luck in nursing school!
