How old do you have to be to get your tubes tied?

  • well I'm 18 I thought I wanted kids I love kids but I don't have the patience idk I'm just thinking about getting it done It's not official I'll probably change my mind later... that I want kids (im not getting my tubes tied until I KNOW for sure this is what I want) but is there a certain age you have to get them done?

    There is no age limit for getting your tubes tied. But most doctors aren't going to do it without a medical reason for people in their 20's with no children. Simply the brain isn't fully developed until the mid 20's and many people who don't want children change their minds later. You would have a hard time finding someone to do it. Getting your tubes tied is a permanent and extreme option for birth control. There are plenty of other very effective options (birth control pill, an IUD, an implant, the depo shot) that can be protect you from pregnancy and be reversed if you decide you want children.

You shouldn't be having enough sex at the age of 18 to warrant getting your tubes tied, and even if you are, you should be using protection.

Most doctors will not tie tubes on women in their 20's unless there is a medical reason or they have already had children. When I had my daughter I was 20 and my doctor would not do it saying that I may change my mind later and wouldn't be able to have children. I recently had my 3rd child at 26 and my doctor was going to do it for me but I changed my mind and did an IUD for 10 years instead. That way if I were to change my mind I still could. You are still very young and still could change your mind. You would hate to have it done permanently and not be able to have a child when your older, more mature, and financially capable of raising a child.

It really depends on the Dr. there is no age requirement. I was almost 38 with 2 kids and they still were like are you sure??? Ahhh, yeah! Your best best is to get one of the implants now that last for 3-5 years etc. It is actually more responsible for a person to realize they don't want to have kids and get their tubes tied than have oops and get an abortion.
