What is the best time to have a second child?

When was the best time for you to have your second child?

  • Thank you in advance for your time. My husband and I have one son who will be three in few weeks. We always thought we would try for a second when our son was 3 or 4...more like now I guess. I am just curious what is the best in your personal experience sooner? farther? and was it hard to get used to a second child? Again thank you.

    My daughter is 3 and my son is 12 weeks. They are 37 months apart and I love the age gap. It is nice that my daughter is potty trained, while my son is still in diapers. She also just started pre-school, so while she's in school, he can be an 'only child' for a few hours a week. I, also, like that she can do some things independently. While I am taking care of her brother, she is able to play in her room, eat a snack or just watch a cartoon. She also loves to help me take care of him. She especially loves to help give him his bath. Everyone feels so differently about the age gap between siblings. Some will tell you it's better to have them really close together and others will tell you to wait a few years. For me, the 3 year age gap is nice. It was not hard for my husband and I to re-adjust to having a baby again. If anything, it was easier the second time around because we knew more. Good Luck and lots of baby dust to you......

Well the furthest apart me and my youngest sibling is 4 years.. and the others go up from there. We are all very close and act like best friends just with more love I would suggest to have them closer in age just from experience.

The closer in age, the better. I have trouble with my younger sister because we are seven years apart. Our brother is the middle kid, and he fits in just fine, but my sister and I struggle, I wish we were closer in age. We'd be able to relate more. I know a couple different families that have ten kids, the oldest being about twenty or so years older than the youngest. This, in my opinion, is the wrong way to do things. My boyfriend and I (after we get married, I'm waiting for a ring, lol) agreed to have our children close together, no more than two years apart max. Of course, that's just us. But in your case, I would say if the timing feels right, go for it. The sooner the better. :)

well, at this point, it is too late to have them "close together." i think a separation of 4 or 5 years can be ideal, because you have time to spend with the second one, in some ways, the same as you did with the first. especially if the older one is in daycare or preschool, even for half-a-day. if your kids are close in age, it's sometimes hard not to lump them all together.

i have sisters and we are all a year or 2 apart. we are very close to each other so that's a good thing to have babies close to each other, but in the other hand its hard to manage them. depending on your life situation, you should start trying now, your child is already 3

I only have one son but my sister was five years older. I always wished we had been closer in age. I often fellt like an only child..especially when she went off to college.
