How to become a midwife?

  • hiya, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am 23 with an undergraduate degree in psychology, i am looking to get into becoming a midwife however i cannot find online whether i can do a postgraduate study from my previous degree or whether i have to do another degree in midwifery? i really dont want to go back to uni for another 3 years as i have a young daughter so was hoping i could do a shorter course in m,idewifery as i aleady have a medical degree... Can anyone shed any light on any ways to get into my chosen career? Thanks in advance :D xx

    You would have to do the whole 3 years...as psychology doesn't teach you the things you need to know as a midwife......you can only do the midwifery short course if you already have a degree in nursing...nothing else!

Midwifery is usually an add on to a nursing degree, but with a medical degree under your belt already, if you're licenced to practice, you may be able to complete bridging studies to let you enter into midwifery as a postgraduate diploma. Otherwise, you may have to complete at least part of the undergraduate degree, your psychology degree may count for 1-2 years of study allowing you to spend less time as an undergrad. Talk to someone at the Royal College of Midwives to see what your options are, they'd be best suited to steer you in the right direction. Good luck!
