How old do you have to be to get your tubes tied?

  • I'm 18 and live in Connecticut, I have two kids, a 2 1/2 year old and a one month old, I asked my doc of I could get my tubes tied and he said I'm too young, he can't make an acception with me havin two kids already? I'm 100% positive I don't want anymore...anyway if anyone knows if there is an age law or if it's just docs preferences, can you let me know? Thank you!

    It's just a matter of the physician preference. Generally they won't tie your tubes unless you are 25 and have 3+ children. At 18 there's a good chance that you may change your mind in the future, especially if you end up with a new partner, and although tubal reversals are an option they generally aren't very successful and carry a lot of risks. Honestly, in this day and age unless you have a medical reason that you can't take hormonal birth control there are so many better reversible options. You can look into an IUD, patches, pills, shots, or implants which are all just as effective as a tubal and completely reversible.

As an adult you have the right to have it done. But I'm not sure if there might be a medical reason for your doctor saying you were to young. Maybe that type of surgery causes a hormone imbalance at a young age. I suggest discussing it further with him. If his reason is only because of age and not medical issues and you really feel you don't want anymore children I would seek another opinion. Meanwhile there are other non permanent birth control options.

i had my kids in connecticut too and they said no to me too.. and i had 2 kids and was 26 at the time.. now im pregnant again with #3 and im 28.. they still said no.. i just think they dont like doing the procedure anymore.. your better off getting mirena, or something like it. everyone i know with them tied has nothing but complaints, with pain and aweful menstral cycles.

I bet they will not do it at least for a decade or another baby. My doctor said after three and I had to have my husbands permission. Can you believe that? It was 1996 and I had to have a mans permission to alter my body. I live in Ohio.

You should be able to. The taxpayers don't want to pay for anymore of your kids.

Here you have to either have two kids or be 26... If you had Medicaid then it's different, they have restrictions..
