Do people with high functioning mild Asperger's syndrome have sensory issues?
-
I'm asking this since my cousin who has a 12 year old beautiful daughter has high functioning mild Aspergers were she looks normal on the outside and acts normal in all situations, is in regular ed, has Friends and one best friend. But has high intelligence on reading comprehension, obsession with math, and as my cousin told me has issues with whatever textile touches rubs her skin gets quite uncomfortable so therefore has bizarre sensations so therefore wears few loose clothing when at home. She would just wear a loose bathrobe when it's cold, or thin textile spaghetti strap gown, or as most of the time wear just a skirt. The reason I ask this is because my cousin who I have known her and her husband especially her daughter for so long and came to hang out with her, is coming to our house over this holiday with her daughter and her husband and trying to see if my husband would be comfortable with her walking around the house just half naked or most cause in the mornings nude since she sleeps with nothing on.I myself am ok with her making herself comfortable when she comes here especially since she has aspergers I have no problem with her walking topless or with nothing on, since I see that it's aspergers and it's not out of being sexual, therefore I don't view it as sexual..

Answer:
Yes, people with high functioning Asperger’s syndrome can (and usually do) have sensory issues. A common type of sensory issues is that certain textures feel very uncomfortable and even painful. That can make it very uncomfortable to wear certain clothes, to touch certain textures and even to eat certain textures of food.

As someone with sensory issues, I sincerely hope this is a genuine question. Sensory issues certainly can cause people to feel uncomfortable with different types of fabrics or materials, or certain fits of clothing. I myself am the opposite of your cousins daughter. I need tight, heavy clothing and bedding. I can't sleep in loose clothing, it irritates me beyond belief. I also can't sleep with sheets on the bed and need a heavy blanket on me at night, even when its sweltering in the house. However, it is in this child's best interest to learn how to function normally in society and public. She at some point needs to find a solution that works for her that is appropriate. While she may be more comfortable physically naked, she needs to find a way to be comfortable while not offending anyone or being inappropriate. You may wish to purchase a loose fitting nightgown for her, or a light robe for in the mornings to put on before she leaves the bedroom she is sleeping in.

My brother has Aspergers and has sensory issues. However, he wears regular clothing, although he is careful to select non binding clothing and avoids a lot of different types of fabrics. Your cousin's daughter wears what she does because they indulge her. It's unnecessary. My cousin's daughter, who has far more serious autism also has sensory issues, but she too simply wears fabrics and styles that are nonbinding, but has no issue with wearing clothing at all times (and nothing skimpy). She's 8.

Yes mild aspies have sensory issues. Not all aspies have sensory issues since it's not in the criteria but many of them do. Yes sensory issues does include not wanting to wear certain fabrics. Some like things loose on them, some like things tight. Some can only wear cotton. Some can't wear wool or polyester. It all depends on the aspie. I for one can't stand wool on my bare skin and I can't even wear it for a few minutes. It feels all scratchy and pokey and it's torture. I can even feel it still if the fabric has 10% wool in it and it still feels the same way as 100% wool. There is other fabric I can't stand but I don't know the names of them. I can't even sleep with my nigh shirt bunched up under me. As a child, long nighties were an issue for me because I didn't like them being bunched up under me so I hardly wore them. I also had to wear my socks pull up, not have them rolled down or folded down and I hated tight clothing. I only wanted knit clothing and anything loose or stretch pants. But I do agree what amanda says, it is inappropriate what she is doing. I can't stand clothes on me when it's real hot out so I like to be naked to stay cool but I can't do that if there are other people in the house. So I wear a bathing suit instead. When I lived with my aunt and uncle, I wore a bathrobe when I left my bedroom and then I take it off when I get to my room again. But now that I live in my own apartment, I can again but won't be able to for the rest of my life because I want to have kids. if my kid is a boy, I won't be able to go naked in front of him. Even if it was a girl, she might feel uncomfortable seeing me naked so I must respect her by wearing something on me. Also when I go outside, I have to keep my clothes on. But places are air conditioned so wearing clothes isn't an issue. But it's good she doesn't want to offend anyone with her nudity.

I have Asperger syndrome and have sensory issues, such as only being able to wear clothes made of certain materials which also have to be loose fitting, disliking loud sounds, disliking touch, etc. It's quite common in people in Asperger syndrome. But I do think your cousin should stop her daughter from going around nude or topless as even though it might not be sexual for her it could be for other people and she is 12 years old now and growing up. She needs to be got out of that habit. It's certainly not a good idea for her to be topless in front of other people even if they are relatives. She needs to find clothes or a robe that she will feel comfortable to wear.
