Anyone has a late period because of progesterone?

What are the progesterone levels right before a period?

  • I have had 2 miscarriages in a row with no explanation. I am trying again and I went in for a HCG quant 4 days before my period to see if I was pregnant. My doctor also suggested I test my progesterone as well in case I am pregnant. Well my HCG came back as 2...and my progesterone came back as 5.44. My period was supposed to come either today or tomorrow. My doctor also said we could re-try tomorrow due to the fact that sometimes you ovulate later and so the baby would implant later and that would cause the negative test. Are all women's HCG supposed to be 0...or just below 5? and does anyone know what the normal levels are for progesterone right before your period? Thanks!

  • Answer:

The progesterone level should be more than 15 ng/ml about 7 days after ovulation. This suggests that the corpus luteum is functioning normally. A low Day 21 progesterone levels suggests the cycles was anovulatory (no egg was produced). Low progesterone and miscarriages Some doctors believe that low progesterone levels during the luteal phase can cause miscarriages. However, this concept of a "luteal phase defect" is now considered to be controversial . Anything below a 5 would be considered the norm for HCG when there is no pregnancy. Very best of luck.
