How long did it take for you to get pregnant?
-
I have been hearing from a lot of people that it took 6 months to a year to get pregnant when they were actively trying. My wife and I want to start trying in a few months for our first child. Now I am paranoid it may take a year to get her pregnant as we are hoping to conceive ASAP. We are both in our mid 20's, very healthy and have no known problems that would prevent a pregnancy. My wife has never been pregnant before and has been on the pill for 5-6 years. How long did it take for you (or your partner) to get pregnant when you were TRYING to get pregnant? If it took a long time, why do you think it took so long?

Answer:
2 yrs the first time, 2.5yrs and counting this time. I was on the pill since my periods started becoming irregular when i was 15. This meant that i was no longer experiencing the symptoms of my condition- PCOS. The pill masked them- but did NOT cause them. PCOS means i don't ovulate or menstruate normally basically. you can google it. Weight was/is also a factor. I lost 10kgs the first time and fell pregnant naturally.

I stopped my birth control late august. Got back into a regular rhythm right away, with a 35 day cycle. Didn't get pregnant in the first cycle. I actually think we missed the fertile cycle because my husbands work sent him out of the country. My body decided to skip the second cycle entirely. Didn't get pregnant the third cycle. Got pregnant fourth cycle. It is generally said that if you stop birth control, it can take anywhere between no time at all and up to 6 months for your cycle to return to regular. After getting back to a fertile cycle, it can indeed take up to 6 months to get pregnant, sometimes a year. Your odds are about one in five, every cycle. And yes, those are the odds for a healthy, young couple. If your wife stops the pill, and does not get a second period after 3 months, call the doctor to get it jump started. If she gets her periods again, count 6 months more months. If not pregnant at that time, call the doctor. I would advise you already stop birth control. If you do not yet want to get pregnant, switch to condoms for the time being. Her body is going to need time to readjust to a life without hormones, might as well start that now :-) Good luck!
