What is statutory maternity pay?

How much maternity pay do you get from the government? and what benefits can i claim?

  • Here goes, please dont think im a scrounger because im not. I hate the fact that i might have to ask for help. Ive been ttc for nearly 3 yrs now and am due to start clomid in June. About the same time the company i work for is going to make me redundant. It couldnt of come at a worse time. To be honest i was thinking about leaving around xmas but i needed to have a little bit of security in the way of maternity pay if i was lucky enough to fall pregnant. Now whatever job i get, i wont qualify for maternity pay if i fall pregnany within the first 6 months! As you can tell im worrying about everything and i know i need to chill out. But any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou! x

  • Answer:

Are you in the UK? If so, you are worrying unnecessarily. You don't have to work for a company for 6 months before you are entitled to maternity pay. You only have to be there for a few weeks before you fall pregnant (so the first day of missed period) and then you are entitled to stat maternity pay. If you start working for a new company after you get pregnant then you are entitled to maternity allowance, which is pretty much the same as maternity pay, as long as you have been working for 6 months of your pregnancy. The current rate of pay is £108 a week for 39 weeks.

Statutory maternity pay is about £100 a week. Once the baby comes you will get child benefit, currently £18.10 a week. If your partner is working you may qualify for working and child tax credits depending on his and yours annual earning for last and this year (complicated method of working out) If your on your own and working the same applies, and youll get help towards child care while you work. If youre on your own and not working youll get Income Support which is £57 ish for you and about £43 child tax credit. There is also a maternity grant you can get dependant on your circumstances nearer the birth but I dont know a lot about that except its about £200. If youre being made redundant, make sure you get what youre entitled to there as well. ACAS or your local cab can tell you.

Hi, I am a single mom and am going to school while pregnant. I don't live off the government, but their was a time where circumstances had me using subsidized housing, just until I got on my feet again, after he ran out. There is no shame in that. Think of all the families with kids that purposely use the government as a permanent thing. That is the shame. look into subsized housing, into food bank, or subsized health care. I don't know where you live, so I don't know what is availbe to you. you will get on your feet again. Congradulations for the baby!!! I am happy for you.
