What does Metformin do for infertility?

Prescribed Metformin today on cycle day 18 do I wait for a new cycle?

  • I saw my ob/gyn today and he prescribed metformin 1000mg twice/day. He was going to go ahead and prescribe clomid, but since I have an hsg scheduled for the 18 he decided to wait to make sure my tubes are clear. I'm pretty sure he wanted me to start taking it today, but I've already ovulated this month. 2 days of positive opks, and temp dropped day before ov and spiked the day after and has stayed high. So I guess I'm wondering if it's okay to start taking it now on cycle day 18. Or if I should wait until AF comes, which is always on cycle day 26.Is there even a point to taking it after already ovulating, or will it hurt my chances for this month. I guess I don't really understand what metformin does for infertility. I don't have PCOS and I ovulate monthly and have a regular 26 day cycle even though my af bleeding is horrid. Any info would help. Thanks!

  • Answer:

It takes Metformin awhile to start working, or before you will see any results, so go ahead and start it. My advice is to take it with food. If you don't, you may get some ill side effects.
