Healthy Lunch Ideas for a Toddler?

Toddler lunch ideas?

  • Anyone have any good ideas or recipes to share?

  • Answer:

Something fun we do is "Builder Sandwiches", we build and "paint" our sandwiches. I put the sandwich ingredients on the plate separately - turkey, cheese, lettuce, bread cut in half. Then I give her 2 or 3 dixie cups that contain a splash of water and a few drops of different food color in each. I use a regular water-color paintbrush (that I've washed first) and she builds and "paints" her own sandwich. Tip - Don't put too much water in the food color "paint" or the bread gets soggy.

My son is 15 1/2 months old and only has his front teeth, so I'm also trying to get some new ideas to add to the same ol' toddler meals. He loves to eat guacamole, so I slice avacado and spinkle it with garlic salt. Today I cut up avacado, tomato and mozzarella into small squares, sprinkled with a little garlic and onion powder, mixed it all together and chilled in the fridge. He loved it. He also likes it if I boil a chicken until is falls off the bone and serve it with green beens and baked (cut up) gold potato with a little spray margarine. Another favorite is a grilled cheese with thin sliced tomato inside and a cup of chicken noodle soup. For his after nap snack he always has a container of "yo baby" whole milk yogurt mixed with cheerios and some sort of fruit in a bowl. I don't know if these are anything different than what you do already, but I know that I don't want my son to grow up like my sister's kids only eating pizza, tacos, chicken nuggets and icecream. HA! HA! I pretty much try to feed him anything I can think of!!! Good luck!!

My kids all love the cheese cubes. They are available at any grocery store, already cut and bagged, or to save money you can buy a big block of cheese and cube it yourself. Tyson also makes chicken nuggets pre-shaped like dinosaurs. We love those also. Also, I've found that cutting sandwiches into odd shapes works well, but it wastes some of the sandwich...if your toddler is learning his/her shapes, just cutting it into squares or diamonds will work just fine, and it doesn't waste a lot of the food. All the varieties of Juicy Juice have been a big hit in our home. For dessert, just cut up some apple & banana slices. No need to resort to sugary foods; fruit is very sweet by itself!
