What is your stance on childhood vaccinations?
-
my daughter is almost 22 months. She all her vaccinations from birth up to 6 months. she turned 1 in February and she was sick with a flu when the time came for her 1 year vaccination. Every time I made an appointment, by the time it rolled around, she has a runny nose or sneezing (likely allergies as she does get them like her father, but to be safe the doc wouldn't give her the vaccination until she was better). Well, now she is almost 22 months like I said and she still hasn't gotten her 1 year or 18 month vaccinations. But I am really reluctant now to even have her vaccinated. I see and read and hear all these stories and studies and whatnot, that link vaccinations to autism, cancer, etc... . When I was young, there were higher chances of getting measles, mumps, rubella, etc...than now, yet we had way less vaccinations than there are today. my doc told me that one of the vaccinations (1 yr or 18 month, can't remember) has 5 needles!!! That's insane!!! What is your take on vaccinations? Did you or did you not get them for your child and why or why not? Please, no "better safe than sorry" answers. I'v looking for at least somehwhat educated and informed opinions. Thanks!

Answer:
I think that it's important to decide whether you want to take the risks of the vaccines or the risks of the illnesses. I'd be really hesitant to say that it's ever an all or nothing situation. Some things, I think, are definitely worth vaccinating against. Others, I think, are totally fine to allow our kids to get. Vaccines aren't bad, but their effectiveness isn't quite as high as we think, and sometimes (I think) it's okay to delay them a bit if that's a concern. Research the illnesses, symptoms, complications and percentages, and see what you're comfortable with.

"stories and studies and whatnot, that link vaccinations to autism" There aren't any. You are reading the rantings of crazy people, not research, and putting your child at risk... Read http://jennymccarthybodycount.com/ http://darryl-cunningham.blogspot.com/2010/05/facts-in-case-of-dr-andrew-wakefield.html "Please, no "better safe than sorry" answers" But, that's the correct answer here. Sorry. If you want to kook out, go for it; it's your kid -- but it's 2011 and a basic science education is freely available via the internet, and there is no excuse for believing "vaccines cause autism"-type nonsense. There are no credible sources anywhere in 2011 even entertaining the idea that there's a link between vaccines and autism; the idea has been thoroughly debunked. It is absolutely _bizarre_ to ask for "educated and informed" opinions while clinging to that sort of nonsense. Why don't you ask your child's doctor to walk you through the risks and benefits of vaccines...? You don't have to believe me, but you probably should believe the person you entrust your child's health to, no?

All three of my children have had all their vaccines and also get the seasonal flu shot. I would explain why but you are clearly not interested in reasons that differ from your own or you wouldn't be attacking another response nor would you demand answers exclude "better safe than sorry" which, given the rare (very rare) instance of severe side effects from a vaccine IS a reasonable response. I also don't know how you can ask for educated and informed opinions and then attack an educated and informed opinion when you clearly are neither if you still believe the vaccines = autism theory that has been widely discredited. If you think vaccines are poison then do some actual research and talk things over with your doctor and make an informed choice rather than biased websites on the Internet.

Read Andrew Wakefield`s Book.Look at customer reviews at Amazon. He said, the vaccines should be spaced out more, and this is why, they ruined him,and discredited him.He also said,he found the live measles virus in the gut and or bowel of autistic children.

In Europe, they used to wait until a child was around 4 years old to vaccinate, when the blood brain barrier had more time to form. This is no longer done.Kids today, get way more vaccines than kids in the 50s,60s,and 70s,and autism is shooting through the roof. Many American children have learning disabilities. My nearly 18 year old son has low functioning autism, and my 6 year old daughter had had no vaccines.I also have a 3 year old grand daughter who has had no vaccines. The girls are fine.My daughter may have some dyslexia and ADD,but she is no where near as impaired as my son,who had all of his vaccines.Look at the NVIC website and make an informed decision.
