How to fake a fever with an ear thermometer?

22 month toddler with 103.5 fever (c/o digital ear thermometer) should I wake?

  • Our daughter came home from daycare today with a fever (102 dropped to 99.8). Gave her motrin 5.5 hrs ago. I just checked her temp (twice) with our Baun digital ear thermometer (she's sound asleep)...temp reads 103.5! She's sound asleep. I understand fevers are not necessarily a bad thing....however, this is getting up there. Should I wake her (it's 2AM PST) to give her Tylenol (to rotate)? Of a lukewarm spongebath? Additional notes: her spirits were 'fussy and clingy' but otherwise fine this evening; she at very well at dinner and her two lower incisors cut through over the weekend. Feel silly asking...but, appreciate the perspective.

  • Answer:

Wake her to give her Tylenol. You should alternate the Motrin and Tylenol every 4 hours. Her fever is high, but it is not dangerously so. Infants and young children get high fevers, it is not uncommon. It would be unusual for an adult to have this high a fever, but not a 22 mo old. My son ran 105 fever a few months ago, I took him to the emergency room , and they weren't freaked out. All they did was keep him in the ER until the next dose of Motrin, then sent us home. As long as it is under 106, Docs don't worry. The Tylenol should bring it down in 30 to 45 minutes. If it doesn't try a lukewarm bath, not cold. SHE WILL NOT GO INTO A COMA OR SEIZURES AT 103.5, THIS IS A "NORMAL" FEVER FOR HER AGE. Also, her temp did come down when you gave her motrin, in all likelihood, she reaaly just needs Tylenol. By the way, according to WebMD, ear temperatures are.5 to 1 degree higher than oral temps. Thought that might ease your mind. By all means call your doc in the am, but as long as the Tylenol brings her temp under 102 until the next dose of Motrin, she should be ok. And don't feel silly for asking!! Moms should always be able to turn to other moms for insight and peace of mind!!

She need to see a doctor asap. A fever that high can cause problems for her later. That fever needs to be brought down and quick.

get her temperature down now. thats way too high, my boy had a temp of over 100 and he started to fit. wet her face with a cool flannel, strip her and take her to the hospital - NOW

I would call a doctor with a temp of that, my son had a very high temp and ended up having fits.

My son once had a temperature of 103.5 while asleep so I rang NHS Direct up and they told me to take to hospital immediately. Best to be safe than sorry.

I would definitely wake her for a dose of Infant Tylenol or Motrin, and perhaps apply some cool compresses. I'd rather disturb her sleep than allow her temperature to get higher. I don't think a fever that high would be due to the new teeth. Definitely keep close watch on her temp. and call the doctor first thing in the morning.

you need to get her down to see a doctor asap. with that sort of temp i would be woried about her being asleep because she may go into a semi comma. Hope she is ok.

First of all don`t feel silly. When it comes to the health of your child don`t hesitate to get help. I would take her to the Emergency room right away.A fever that high requires immediate attention. She could have been exposed to something at daycare by one of the other children. Make sure they check for Meningitis. I`m not trying to scare you, there is good reason to be concerned. Always trust your instincts and err on the side of caution. If everything turns out fine then there`s no harm done.(except for a sleepless night and a bill from the hospital). I speak from personal experience, so Please, don`t wait. God Bless You and your daughter and good health to you and your family.

I'd give her another dose of Tylenol. If that doesn't bring it down, then I'd try the sponge bath. If neither works then you really should take her to the Dr. (I'd take her anyway the next morning) but if she doesn't seem to be stressing with her breathing or anything at the moment, I think you'd be ok to wait until morning. If there is any change or you are just uncomfortable, trust your instincts and head for the ER! Your instincts are usually right.

I know it's past time to help you but I'll tell you what I did when my son had a temp like that. I medicated him that night and called the doctor as soon as they opened the next day. He ended up having viral tonsillitis. So, your daughter probably most definitely needs to be seen be her pediatrician. Goodluck, I hope she gets better.
