How to watch a video on a DSi?

A DSI for a 3 year old ?

  • I was shocked today when in a conversation with my sister in law she said she was getting her 3 year old girl a DSI for Xmas. I tried giving her advise on how it's not good for a kid that age to play video games it's already bad enough kids watch tv I am totally against her decision . What do you guys think ? I'm mom to a 3 year old as well and for Xmas I'm getting her a kitchen along with her blender , toaster , coffee maker and mixer I'm sure she is really going to enjoy it :)

Honestly it is your sister's child not yours. I would be careful what you say to her, she may take offense. I know I would if my sister tried to say something about how I am parenting my child, but then again I raised my sister's child. As a teacher though I can give you this. Have you looked at technology today? Sadly if a child does not know how to use technology early then it does hold them back when they get to school. There are a lot of toys out there today that are for child development that are really just wrapped up in a video game, look at Leapfrog toys. I don't think it is so much the DSI that is bad but the games your sister chooses to buy her and how much time she lets her daughter play are really the issues. A child needs an imagination and needs to learn to play without technology, but they also need to know how to use the technology when they do learn.

What really is the difference between getting her a DS and the vtech or leapfrog versions? Vtech and Leapfrog both make small handheld games for toddlers that help with learning that are similar to a DS. Nintendo actually offers a lot of learning games that are good for toddlers that can help her with numbers, colors, alphabet, shapes, recognizing objects. There are dora, barbie, sesame street, hello kitty games for the DS and several others that are appropriate for her age. You choosing a totally different gift for you child doesn't make you a better parent. While kids do play too much video games and watch too much tv, all things can be done in moderation. Your choice of gift doesn't actually promote exercise or learning either. You picked out something you think your daughter will enjoy having and playing with - your sister in law gets to do that too.

that's ridiculous she's gonna brake it in an hour, and video games, and TV have very negative effects on a developing child.

Not a good idea imo, mainly because kids at that age still love actual toys, things that can be built, hugged, and use with their imagination. Also, by starting out with electronics at such a young age, it sets the bar high for topping it the following year...at that rate, she'll have to buy an iPhone to satisfy the child by the time she turns 7.

its her baby...

Yes, I do agree with you but sadly she is the parent and that is her choice. Congrats to you for keeping those video games out of your kids lives though! :) I hate seeing kids glued to them. Your sister in law will soon realize she is just wasting her money. They are not something easy for a 3 year old to figure out. Chances are she will hear every 5 seconds "Mom, I just lost the game" "Mom how do I run/jump/ catch" etc and then she will just get frustrated and set it aside I'm sure. If she really insists on a video game I would of did a wii or xbox connect. Something that keeps her moving.
