I have flat ears. Is that normal?

Is it 'normal' for a four (almost five) year old to want her ears pierced?

  • Here is an extract from our conversation: Can I have my ears pierced? - No Please Ma? - No Why not? - Because it means getting holes in your ears The needle (childhood immunisation booster) was a hole in my arm - And it hurt, you cried. It hurt for a wee bit, but I’ll never get the nasty germs now - Getting your ears pierced will hurt as well, and its 2 holes. It’ll hurt and I’ll cry, but it’ll only hurt for a wee bit and I’ll always be able to wear earrings. - Why don’t we get you some clip-ons instead? Cos clip-ons are crap - Magnets? Magnets are nearly as crap as clip-ons.

  • Answer:

I had no interest in earrings at 5, but by seven i wanted them desperately and felt like i had completely missed the boat not having them done sooner. I have very vivid memories of being in Claire's and wishing to be able to wear earrings like grownups. My mom let me get them for my 7th birthday present. I was ecstatic, looked forward to it for months, and took care of them myself because I was told they were my responsibility. I have carried that memory all my life, and I enjoy it to this day. I would let your daughter have them as a gift or reward and make it clear that she needs to help keep them clean. Since she's only 5 you will probably have to help, but I'm sure you can make her part of the process so she can feel responsible too.

Wow, your little girl seems to know what she wants and what she is in for pain wise. I would suggest that you tell her that if she still wants to have her ears pierced by her birthday then you will make it a special day and get her ears pierced.

LOL. maybe you should let her get them. I was the same way, my parents let me when I was 5. It seems like she knows it will hurt alittle (it really doesnt though) plus most places, if there is 2 people there, will do the ears at the same time for children. and magnet and clip ons ARE crap!!

little girls usually want to be princesses! i wasn't allowed to get my ears pierced until i could take care of them myself. I was 14. Simply set a milestone that she has to reach before she gets her ears pierced (starting high school, riding a two wheeler bike... keeping her bedroom clean for a whole year ... is this ever going to happen? lol) just if she reaches the milestone, then keep your word.

She's seen other girls with them, and just wants to be like them. Maybe she just thinks they look pretty, and she's a girly girl type. I don't see that as unusual. Some people have their baby's ears pierced (?) but personally I think , like you, 4-5 is too young.

Yes, I'd say it's 'normal'. My sitter's daughter wanted her ears pierced at that age, so she got them done as a birthday present for her 5th birthday. I remember the first time I got mine done I was just a couple years older than that.

Yes, very normal. My niece wanted hers pierced at 5 yrs. Her mom let her and she loved them at first. Now, 2 yrs later, I never see her with earrings on. I really don't know why. It's up to you if you let her. You make the decisions.

YES IT IS NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After 1 year old, they are allowed to get their ears pierced. She is right. Anyone cries when they get their ears pierced. She will have it for life! she's a girl and it's not against the law! What's so bad about it? Pain will be gone just after 3 days or before.

that's normal...i'm pretty sure alot of her little friends have their ears pierced...my daughter was 6 mos old when we got her ears pierced...now at 13 she doesn't wear earrings....unless it's for a special occasion...if all else fails tell her that as she gets older and can take care of her ears then you'll think about getting ears pierced..

My parents pierced my ears the day I was born, and I got a second hole when I was about 12. It does hurt a bit but the pain will go away after a couple of days.. I think it's more than normal for a 5 year old to want her ears pierced.. It's actually very cute to see a little face covered with hair and ears with glittery earrings standing out!
