DO you believe in SPANKING?

  • (children i'm speaking of!!!)...and NO, i'm not talking about smacking on the face or anything like that, or with a belt either, but i truly believe , ...that some kids , many kids...WOULD DEFINITELY benefit, from a good old fashioned, over the knee , spanking. Please dont tell me about "child abuse" and all that. Cus spanking is not child abuse. My daughter is grown, what made me ask this question is, i've just seen for the first time, (that silly show "supernanny", ) and i'll tell ya , if my daughter, who is now 25, EVER told me to shut up, or pulled some of the crap i saw on that show, or even anytime, such as in the grocery store, ..you better believe she'd gave gotten a spanking. When i was a kid, spanking was "normal", ...and i look at todays kids, and teens, ...they are worse than ever as far as respect, and no one can disagree with that. So what does that say? ps, if you do answer, ..please state your age.

    The secret is balance. I am 48, my son is nearly 15. He is a wonderful kid and we are very close even though he is a teenager. When he was younger (and I was too!) my first choice was not to spank him and there were plenty of times that I succeeded. However, there were other times it did not. When I felt a spanking was in order, I let him know that he was going to be punished because he misbehaved, but the spanking was not immediate, I always waited until my temper cooled. It was not so after the fact that he didn't understand why I was spanking him. Only 5 minutes or so. Additionally, I only spanked him with a bare hand so I would feel as much pain as he did on his butt. We never needed to spank him too often because, smart kid that he is, he knew they don't feel so good! I'd say we probably only needed to give him a spanking 6 times during his childhood and none at all since he was 10 or 11. We always try to work things out, treat him with respect, but he understands as well that there are consequences for being disrespectful and disobedient.

i am all for spankings. i have a son who is completely off the walls and sometimes it's the only way to get my message across to him. saying no, time outs, and "spoiling the child" don't work at our house. he's only 20 months, and his spankings aren't full on spankings. they're more like little swats that startle him and grab his attention. he only gets them when he's doing something that he knows he's not supposed to be doing or is going to get hurt by doing. i'd rather spank him than have him be electrocuted by climbing into the turtle tank and knocking in the heat lamp or smashing dishes on the floor and cutting his feet open or walking around in the window ledges on the 2nd floor of our home. i know a lot of people don't believe in it, but sometimes, it's just safer. people can think and say what they want, but i'm always going to be a mommy who spanks. age: 20

I try other options first but if the behaviour continues past a time out or two she gets one solid whack on her butt. Sometimes I let her choose, time out or a spank and oddly enough she has chosen a spank a few times. i don't spank out of anger, I don't spank without trying other punishments first but I do spank. I'm 31

I defiently believe in it. I was spanked. My parents were. I do the same to my son. Trust me, I see kids that are spanked and the ones that aren't. You can tell the difference. I'm 24.

I truly believe that spanking is not the answer. I find much better results with punishments and taking away things that they love. Consistent discipline and clear rules keep kids in line. Those kids in the shows you mention are out of control because the parents don't do any disciplining and have no rules or expectations of their kids. Also many teenagers these days are disrespectful because their parents are disrespectful and they were never taught proper manners. It is the parents jobs to raise their children to be positive contributors to a society. I love how these parents call the "super nanny" to save them as if it isnt their fault that their kids are little monster. Poor them, they are not bad parents, they just dont have the skills to teach their kids. What a load of crap. Parents need to step up to the plate and raise their kids properly.

Yes firmly, until I had my son. Striking him...I can't do it. Right now he is 22 mos and he understands when he is naughty. I put him in the corner and he stays there. He hit me across the face after I told him no boobie he needed to eat his dinner. I grabbed him and stuck him in the corner. After a few minutes I called him out he walked over to me and gently stroked my cheek while I was explaining why he was punished. When he was playing with something he shouldn't all I have to say is "Do you want to go in the corner?" He will stop what he is doing and say "no..." I have a good son, he is smart and is very quick to learn. There is no need. I am 33
