What should I expect from daycare?

  • My 16 month old just started daycare. He is pretty pleasant about letting me leave and seems happy when I pick him up but not frantic. He goes to Kindercare which makes a lot of claims about all of the great activites and themes that they do with the kids. Well, I haven't seen any of it. It kinda seems like they are just sitting around and watching the kids. The afternoon teacher just sits on the floor and plays with whatever kid comes to her. I guess this is better than doing other things standing up and ignoring the kids but I just think she should be walking around and talking more to the kids. I was watching thru a window before I picked him up yesterday and another kid threw a block at my son. The teacher didn't even see it or say anything. Do you think I should say something to the owner about the quality of instruction and supervision? Or will this just piss them off? I pay $215 a week so I would hope that he is getting the best care.

  • Answer:

My son goes to a Kindercare as well, and its wonderful. It sounds like your concerens may be legit. At his Kindercare, there is a great mix of structure and free play, and they are very diligent in dealing with any scuffles that inevitably arise between the kiddos. There is a lot of interaction with the kids. I would say something to the owner. If she is worth dealing with she will discuss them with you, frankly, you don't want a huge investment with a place you cannot voice your concerns. I'll give you a for example, before I started my son the friend who referred us to our Kindercare felt that one of the teachers, while okay, didn't really interact with the kids enthusiastically-she told the manager and the manager ultimately let the person go. We've had a great experience with Kindercare, it will be super pricey when my second comes but I definitely see the benefits and my son adores all his teachers. I would definitely arrange a sitdown with the manager, and look elsewhere if she isn't receptive. Good Luck.
