Cows milk or lactose free milk?
-
My baby just turned one and she switched to regular milk. The cows milk has been making her constipated. Today i bought the Lactose free milk to let her drink. I dont know if i should just let her drink the cows milk and let her get use to it until her constipation clears up. Or should i just let her drink lactose milk only? Howlong does it usually take for the constipation to clear up? Could lactose cause constipation?

Answer:
Lactose intolerance can cause constipation, especially with cheesy things. With an allergy you would have other symptoms as well, like eczema, hives, or toher rashes. Possibly vomiting or breathing difficulties. An allergy is considered life threatening, and an intolerance is usually not. For constipation use an enema ,but first call your doctor.

Water provides all the liquid people need.Lactose(milk sugar) intolerance is widespread.People don't need to drink milk.If you want your child to get the benefits of milk products, feed her cultured milk products in which the sugar has been converted out by enzymes.

This is a common problem. Lactose free milk is helpful for people who are lactose intolerant (gas, cramping, pain) after drinking regular milk. This is an inherited condition so if no one else in your family has it it is unlikely that your baby does. Constipation is not a symptom of lactose intolerance. All babies should have whole milk (not reduced fat or fat free) until the age of 2. They need the extra fat during this time because their neurological system is still developing and it depends on certain fatty acids to develop properly. 2-3 cups of milk (16-24 ounces) is what she needs nutritionally. If she is drinking more than that try to cut it back. Encourage her to drink some plain water and 2-4 ounces of apple, pear or prune juice per day. Try to avoid other constipating foods--bananas, carrots, "white" foods (such as white bread, white rice, pasta). Whole grain versions of these foods (brown rice, whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta) have more fiber and are less processed which helps constipation. Plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. If the problem persists, you could consider other milks such as soy milk or goats milk but this usually is not necessary. There are also follow up formulas available if you want to try them.

What is most likely causing the constipation is the casein and that is present in any and all cow's milk dairy products. Ever wonder why there is a cow on the Elmer's Glue bottle? It's because it's made with casein - that's the sticky part. Epsom salt bath can clear up constipation very quickly. So can extra magnesium supplements or even organic blueberries. If you want to give her milk, I suggest Goat's Milk - we gave our kids Meyenberg's Goat's Milk from the time they were infants instead of formula and we never had any problem with it, since it is very low in Casein. It somes in a powder and we mixed it fresh, watered down as much as we needed. Peace! PS - in response to another answer: Yes, fat is important for growing children - quality essential fatty acids like those found in Olive oil etc. I have heard cow's milk builds big bones (like cows have) and goat's milk is closer to human milk in it's make up and healthier for people all around.

I think you might of jumped too far...maybe you should of switched to 2%. You can always start out with 2% and the mix half 2% with whole milk until the full switch over to whole mailk

I recently read an article that all kids should have milk with as much fat in it as possible. it said that the fat in cows milk the found pertects the brain from many different things # 1 mothers milk has the most fat of all # 2 children that had milk of 3.5 % fat had a better inteligence rate than kids that drank fat free milk or skim milk so they study;d kids that are lactose intolerant and found that they scored worse that anyone. so they did a ten year study and they found out that from birth till 18 years old the brain is always growing and developing, and that the fat in milk helped the brain to work better, the higher the fat content the faster the brain developed, nad the healthier it was. my kids have been on the highest fat content milk i can get my hands on, over the four years since I switched thier school marks are improving all the time, coincidence !. I do not know, but i;m giving my kids the best shot possible in life.

I'm not a big fan of cow's milk any longer. With what I've been reading about how they inject cows with hormones and whatnot to produce more and more milk. Its not as natural as it once was. Have you noticed how tall children are becoming or how fast they develop, or even how much they weigh at birth? Its mostly due to the hormone levels in cows milk. Factoring in the specifics of childrens family, of course. I prefer soy milk with its natural healthy properties.

Drinking cow's milk after one year will cause no harm to the baby as long as the milk given is clean and wholesome. Always use milk with lactose unless and until the baby suffers from lactose intolerance. Lactose aids in the brain development and acts as a source of energy. Drinking milk containing lactose will not cause any constipation, rather it acts in the reverse, i.e. it acts as a laxative. For more details visit http://www.dairyforall.com
