What is up with sesame street?

What's wrong with Sesame Street?

  • I was raised on Sesame Street, my mother swore by it so it struck me as odd when a parent recently told me she didn't allow her children to watch the show. Now, i know it's been nearly twenty years since I watched it, but I thought it was educational. Teaches letters, numbers, shapes, colors, matching, some spanish, reading, etc. Has something happened to the show I should be aware of? Other children I care for watch it and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Her children are very bright 18mos and 3yrs, I would have thought Sesame Street would be perfect.

  • Answer:

Some people don't like Sesame Street, they say it is too liberal, and their are too many ethnics on it.

i don't think anything has really changed. if it has, it's probably for the better. i'm 21 and i still watch it sometimes to reconnect with my inner child. besides, everything ever aired on PBS is fantastic.

Well I think maybe she is afraid to let her kids watch tv if she doesn't let them watch Sesame Street! My son,2, loves elmo, big bird etc...And yes, it is still the same old Sesame Street as it was years ago so I haven't any idea why she doesn't allow it. Have you asked her?

My grandma always hated it. She said it never stayed on any one thing long enough. Also the new Sesame Street is way different than the one you remember. Or at least it seems that way to me. There are no adults now and there are a lot of characters who act like annoying children act, not how proper children should act.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the show, I also grew up watching it as well as my three boys. Little things have changed, but for the better. It shows a diverse culture, but that is what we live in. The problem is the stereotypes close minded people put on it. Such as Bert & Ernie being gay, Cookie monster being unhealthy, etc... It's a childrens educational program, kid's don't think this way. Get over it!! Let kids be kids. I think every kid's show out there has had some sort of label at one point in time, even Mister Roger's.

it has developed a liberal bent to some.

My kids love Sesame Street and I don't have any problem with it. It introduces colors, shapes, numbers, and has great little songs. The segments are short but have been made for children with smaller attention spans. It's a parent's perogative to monitor what their kids watch or don't watch and I respect that. I think SpongeBob is hilarious but my three year old wouldn't stop calling everything and everyone stupid after watching it a few times so it's not allowed anymore. I totally don't understand a word Elmo says.

People have gotten weird. I let my daughter watch it, she loves it and is just as bright and well adjusted. people will find something wrong with anything. It's a great show I think, it teaches her all the things you mentioned and in a fun way. People blame tv for all the things they didn't go over with them. just because cookie monster eats cookies all the time, doens't mean your child will grow up to be obese and unhealthy, that's your responsibility to teach them. ok, done ranting.

There are nazi mothers all over the place, telling you what is good and what's not. I watched it as well and it's fine. That parent is crazy, that's all.

I have a 2 year old, and she really enjoys Sesame Street. I'm fairly picky about how much TV she watches, and the programs she watches. But, when we both enjoy watching Sesame Street, Blues Clues, and Dora together. I guess that everyone has a different opinion, and what one mother sees as a good educational program, another mother may see it as something she does not want her children to watch.
