What are some good sentences with the word tentative in it?

How do I find out what level my 2 year old is at? He speaks in 9+ word sentences and knows 4 syllable words.?

  • We have looked at charts that tell the number of words each age should know but How do you count that many words? Is there a way to find out what his verbal communication level is? He tells his own make believe stories, and is understood by all adults except when he uses an usual word for his age i.e "ingredients" they will look puzzled and ask him to repeat what he said.

  • Answer:

He sounds like a normal 2 year old to me.

He isn't behind. He's fine. Two year olds vary alot in how well they can communicate. There was a 17 month old who could read so your not going to set any world records. Lots of 2 year olds know all their letters, phonics, shapes, simple math, colors etc. Even knowing how to read before age 3 isn't all that rare. You quit looking at charts at that point, because they no longer matter for his speaking ability. You know his speaking is fine, so now focus on other abilities, like reading. Once they speak in sentences and know over 100 words and pronounce things clearly you move on to something else as the focus of comparing your child to others. Or you brag about something specific they said recently. But yeah, no one counts words over 100, and no one cares about sentence length after 5 words. Word length means nothing. My neighbor's son's first word at 8 months old was "hippopotamus".

abcmouse.com is good to see what level he's at. Sounds like he's on track. Can he write his name, abc's and count? If so, get him on some early reading books level 1 so he can read some by 3.

Let's just say, good job for working with your child and speaking to your child like an adult. But don't think that his verbal communication means anything in particular other than a readiness to talk. My 4 year old daughter knew her letters, sounds, could read some names, talk just like your son at 2 (she would say words like amputation, mortgage, etc.) Right now at 4 she is reading, understands higher level thinking, but I don't think it is any indication other than her willingness to learn. I am a Kindergarten teacher and I'll can't tell you how many parents think their children must be put into gifted because they spoke early and there is no indication of being a genius because of their verbal ability at an early age. My daughter is advanced for going into Kindergarten, but it is because of the attention I give her and the conversations we have. So many parents don't actually take the time to sit down and just talk with their child. At the same time, my 1 almost 2 year old son is not talking very much compared to my daughter, but his ability to put puzzles together, even recognized sounds at his age is sooner than my daughter, but he just isn't talking for us (but can say sounds of letters thanks to starfall.com) but I would not say that he is not as bright as my daughter. I say stop worrying about what level your child is. Your child may be a genius, but he could just be a great verbalist.
