What could cause a chronic rash?

What could cause a rash over the bum cheeks?

  • My son is almost 2.5 and has been out of diapers now for awhile except at bed time. He wears pull ups when we go out somewhere, and around the house he is naked.(we're potty training right now). He has had a rash on his bum cheeks for days now, it comes and goes(fades) but it is still noticeable to us. It really looks like someone spanked him very hard. He isn't complaining about them being sore, it's like he doesn't even notice it. When I have felt it earlier it feels like rough skin. He does not have rash anywhere else over his body. Has anyone experienced this? Would you think it to be a reason to head to see our doctor tomorrow?

I noticed something similar with Jake when he was first toilet trained. His rash was on the bum cheeks and on his testicles. You say it is rough to touch as well as flaring up red more so then other times? It sounds like eczema. Turns out Jake has it, and the first place it appeared was his bum. We use a prescribed fatty ointment to treat it when it flares up (sometimes it can be itchy and irritable but mainly Jake doesn't complain about) and are currently awaiting an appointment with a dermatologist to see if we can find the trigger. He now also gets it on his face as well as his bum :( I have tried using natural products as I don't like using the fatty ointment (steroid cream) for extended periods for obvious reasons but they just don't work. Nothing works To me it sounds exactly like eczema. Please do not take the advice of the person who said to use an anti-fungal cream as this will only cause the skin to dry out further. the skin needs to be kept very moisturized with eczema. Ask your pharmacist, he should be able to immediately diagnose whether it is eczema or it is indeed a fungal condition. But don't use the anti-fungal until you are sure :) Milania's Mom - I don't think you have a TD fairy, it's just more often then not you give sh!tty advice

Is it just red, or are there bumps or spots? If it's just red, I agree with the others that it could be eczema. Patrick has dealt with eczema since he was a baby, and it's common for him to get in on his butt. If it looks like there's some bumps/spots, check his hands and feet for other sores. I once took Jana into the DR for what a thought was a really bad diaper rash (almost looked like bug bites), and it turned out it was hand, foot, and mouth disease (a common virus in infants and children). Has he been sick lately, with a fever or stuffy nose? If it was HFM, the rash generally shows up 3-7 days after the child appears to be over all symptoms of illness. My mind always jumps to Hand, Foot, and Mouth because my kids get it ALL the time. It runs rampant in daycare centers and is usually pretty harmless.

do you spray your house with anything that would cause skin irritation? If you do then that could cause little ones bums to become red if they sit on it or come in contact with it (it may hurt, it may not). Regardless your doctor will give you the best answer. Good luck.

I did with mine at that age too and I determined it was because he'd started eating ketchup and he was sensitive to the vinegar/tomato combination in it. So it could be something new he's eating. I found ketchup not to be an issue anymore once he was potty trained, although it sometimes causes slight eczema-like spots on his skin. What he was in diapers, we called it 'the red butt' and it was a major factor in getting him to focus on being out of diapers. It's because of the pH of his urine or poop, I think.

could be a yeast infection. I would ask your Pediatrician to be sure! (I LOVE my thumbs down fairys!)

Could be eczema, psoriasis, diaper rash from the night time pull ups, thrush (yes they can still get it at that age) or just dry skin. Start with some baby lotion. If that doesn't work use some classic A&D (the smelly brown stuff) and apply it very thinly and rub it in gently until. If that doesn't work you can try generic lotrimin. Yes the foot cream. It is anti-fungal. Since thrush is often an over abundance of yeast fungus, the anti-fungal will help. If that still doesn't resolve it, off to the pediatrician you go. Then again, I'm not a doctor and this should not be considered the advice of an expert, just the experienced. Edit - The anti-fungal is not the first step. I should have said this earlier but the best idea is to call your pediatrician. If it is eczema or psoriasis they can give you a prescription or a recommendation for an over the counter. My recommended solution is meant to be spread out over a couple of weeks. Lotion for a while. If no effect is made then move to the A&D...so on and so forth. The poster after me is totally correct. If it is eczema then anti-fungal is the opposite of a good idea. But if it is thrush that idea came from MY pediatrician and worked like a charm on my daughter. Again, I'm not a doctor, I'm not an expert, I'm a parent of a daughter with sensitive skin...that's it.
