If your name is like carmen and your family calls you Carmelita?

My 2 yr old calls me by my first name and calls grandma "mom". Will it pass?

  • Since my son's always heard me calling my mother "mom" and her calling me by my first name.. whenever he is speaking to me he calls me by my first name (betty) and sometimes he'll say "bettymum" but he calls his grandma "mom" all the time.. Is this something that happens often? Will he eventually stop?

  • Answer:

My son did it for a while. Then we just started calling each other the names we wanted him to call me (she would call me mommy and I would call her grammy). He eventually picked up on it. It happens with almost all 2yos, it'll pass so dont worry!

No worries dear! My son did the same exact thing and it upset me to no end. Then I finally figured it out. He called me by my first name because everyone else did. And he called my mother "mom" because thats what my brother and I called her. Makes sense doesnt it? Kids really are like sponges... they will pick up every little thing... good and bad. Best of luck!

You need to address the grandmother as grandma or whatever she wants to be called so he'll know what to call her. And she needs to refer to you as 'mom' or whatever. It's not that hard. They don't come into this world knowing everything they just repeat what they hear.

My son did the same thing...he heard grandma call gramdpa Bruce...so he did the same thing...we corrected him for a while, then he eventually stopped...he's 2-1/2.

Teach him what is correct. It won't stop. I NEVER called my mom by her first name and neither did my brother. It's not normal.

Nancy

Yes, it will pass. He is just mimicking what he hears you call your mom.

My three y/old just started that this past week. Except for he calls me "daddy" he calls his daddy "grandma" and his grandma "mommy". We have never called each other by these names, he just gets comepuzzled like that. I wish I could help you more, but i need the answer too! Thanks for asking! ;)

whenevr you talk to him, always include the mommy word.. for example: "Mommy will buy you an ice cream, would you like that?" or maybe do a baby talk like "Mommy loves, <baby's name>" .. and then when your mom arrives at your house, remember to tell him " Oh, grandma's here!" or "Grandma wants you to visit her" .. something like that.. it will help him distinguish that you're his mommy and your mom's his grandmother..
