What would cause an annual outbreak of hives?

Other than sugar what can cause hives in a toddler?

  • My 18 month old son broke out in hives a few months ago. His doctor said it was most likely an allergy but she wasn't too concerned about finding out the cause because the rash wasn't bothering him (he didn't even itch). The hives went away but have returned over the last few days. They still don't bother him but I am curious as to what is causing it in case it is something that I can change. All I can think of is that it is either an allergy to mosquito bites or due to teething as he has been teething both times that the hives have broken out but I don't know if either of those could result in hives. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could cause it? He doesn't eat much sugar and it isn't the laundry detergent causing it.

  • Answer:

Any history of being lactose intolerance?

Ranch Dressing used to make my kids get hives all around their mouth and neck when they ate it. My doctor said that this was very common in young kids with ranch dressing. Just keep a note of the foods are eaten before the hives appear. My doctor told me also, that the hives were not of any danger to my children since they did not have any other symtoms to go with it. My kids all out grew this, and still eat ranch.

If he is teething and you are using oragel or something that could be it. While teething he could be running a low temp fever and that can cause hives. The body is acting out because it has to work to fight the fever. Have you had blood work done? The allergy tests suck really bad but it might be neccesary. It could just be a virus but your dr. needs to check for everything. The immune system could be low and is working harder to fight a virus. Blood count should be the first thing. Dove soap and Gain detergent is the only thing I can use with my daughter. No bleach stuff. Hives are an allergic reaction or the body fighting something. Benedryl is a wonderful thing for that whether the baby is itching or not. It could make him drowsy or wide open. good luck.

It could just be something he's eaten. If I eat cucumbers I get the hives. Make a list of the things he eats each day and when he breaks out in hives you can narrow it down to what food is causing this.

It could be something he's eating...or something that's he's coming into contact with. Have you changed soap, laundry detergent, etc? Animals also.

My oldest broke out in hives when he ate water chestnuts. My youngest broke out in hives when he ate brazil nuts or filberts. We are not sure which of the two. He was eating from a tub of mixed nuts. These two were the only two types he had never had before.

a lot of kids are allegic to egg whites, or it could be an external thing like a blooming flower.

Are you in tune with what your child eats..??Have you ever noticed or observed a pattern, with a certain food for instance ..yes and it could be laundry soap what else have you?If your childs allergy is no way life threatening or whathave you any decent doctor or pediatrician is really not going to be concerned about it (but then again maybe if you very wealthy and pre to it)You may find a wealthy quack. Of course I should not say that ,thats not fair..But getting to the root of your infants allergy would literly require yoy infant to be poked constantly by needles and blood teasts for a long time ..That would be like torture.. Why would you want to do taht in a child generly healthy with no severe complications.Regular doctors know this ,which is why yours does not seem very concerned... You on the other hand can easily pinpoint whether it is coincedence or not,I would also consider wool and carpeting and that maybe your childs skin is very sensitive...It will probably pass.Allergies if not serious usually do..Or people finally figure out on their own whats inducing ' a allergic reaction .Consider yourself lucky.People and children have died from severe allergies ..

Food allergies, environmental changes. Keep track of the food he eats and the air quality reports.
