What do you think about educational learning games?

Do you think that all these learning games for children are going to turn them into lazy couch potatoes?

  • I think that all of these video games are ridiculous. They are going to turn toodlers into lazy couch potatoes all because their parents decided to slap a DVD in, instead of reading them a book. When I was a child, my parents did not place a video game in front of me all because it had the ABC's in it. I learned the old fashion way; by reading books and studying. At age 7, I taught myself the times table simply from looking inside of a math book! I also think that it is stupid to assume that "parents do not have enough time" to read to their children. This is the average HRS for a working American; you work 8-9 HRS and you supposedly come home around 5 or 6 PM. Instead of deciding to read TBG to your one year old, you collapse on the sofa and watch "American Idol." The average American adult goes to bed around 10-11. You have FIVE hours to spend time with your child, instead, you abandon them to stupid little games all because the commercial speaker told you that it is "So great!!!"

  • Answer:

I agree. Kids need to have parent interaction but also just time to play with blocks or other things that require actual intelligence and creativity instead of rote memorization. My daughter learned the ABCs when she wanted to mainly by asking us questions about what different letters were. We never had to sit down and "teach" it to her (and she's not even three yet) but she got it from us in bits and pieces. But I don't think learning the ABC's is an indication of intelligence so much as just ability to memorize. What kids need to develop intelligence is not just raw facts, but abilities like figuring out how to make a block tower that doesn't fall over (or that does fall over) or how to draw and things like that. If you're not going to have enough time to read to your kids, don't have kids.

I have had not an TV access for several years. I have a TV and a VCR that I occassionally let my son watch for short spans with kid friendly TV shows on tape. I think that the DVDs and such are a totally twisted marketing thing. Eventually people will think if they don't have them, then they are not doing right for their children. My son loves the library by the way and we do a lot of our word learning this way.

my son (22 months) only watches 2 programs, Lazy town and another that teaches him sign language. i don't agree with sticking your kid in-front of the t.v for the day, the parents who do this will probably be complaining in a few years when their kids are severely obese!! i would much rather spend my time reading, playing and teaching my son things without the help of all the new learning toys that are out!! p.s. kids only reflect what the parents do so if the parents watch t.v. all day then so will the kids, its not the games that make the kids couch potatoes its the parents!!

If you are unsure, you can always return it if you want to. If you only allow your children to go on it for 15 minutes a day and the rest of the day no TV, then your children won't become obese or lazy. In many cases the children are only allowed to go on for 15 minutes, but then they don't want to exercise and it can become out of control. If that happens, be strict and place the video game out of reach of the children. Hope this works! Oh yeah, I suggest Leap Frog and for older children Quantum Pad. These are great because you can get different cartridges for it.

hello

just send your kids outside and let them play those games when it's raining or too cold. you're not going to single handedly abolish the whole video game thing.

well the only thing is that at least they are learning something constructive that they will actually use in the future instead of just some silly how to steal a car or to kill some opponent game.

I feel like it will make them lazy too Its better to get them involved in books and interact with other kids but do activities out side teach them to plant a garden. When I was young we never played video games we learned the old fashion way plus we had chores too, we had to make wood and clean animal pens and help plant and harvest the garden. my daughter is 6 mos now and I want her to know how to do things with out the TV. I think there is to much computer things out there for kids the parent needs to interact with their kids with books and other things but not with computer stuff someday they will be couch potatoes.
