Is it to early to sign up for afs?

Is this an early sign of autism?

  • If a 10 month old baby has 2 sets of stacking toys (2 red circles, 2 yellow stars, 2 blue triangles, etc) and will only play w/ the 2 that match, at any given time... is that an early sign of autism? For example, if he comes across a yellow star and a red circle, he will drop one and pick up the one that matches what he's holding. He does this a lot. Should I be concerned or is this normal behavior? (No other early signs of autism)

  • Answer:

No, this alone is not an early sign of autism. While an "encompassing preoccupation with one or more stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest that is abnormal either in intensity or focus" is listed in the DSM IV criteria for diagnosing autism... this would have to be manifested in more than just one activity. In addition, even if your child manifests an encompassing preoccupation with multiple activities (like sorting), he would also have to exhibit 5 or more other behaviors defined in the DSM IV definition for autism to be diagnosed. This might include impairments in social interaction, eye contact, development of spoken language, lack of emotional reciprocity, lack of play skills... While I cannot say that your child definitely does not have autism (based on such limited information), I can, without reservations, tell you that the sorting of toys would not necessarily mean anything as far as a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Here is a link to the definition of autism from the Department of Health and Human services. This is the DSM IV (diagnostic criteria) that any psychologist or doctor would use in their diagnosis of an ASD (autism spectrum disorder). http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/overview_diagnostic_criteria.htm As stated in the defintion, your little one would have to display 6 or more of the "symptoms" to fall under the umbrella of autism. My guess... you've got a detail oriented little learner on your hands! Maybe a budding scientist?!?!! Hope this helps!

I have experience with autism - here is some signs... Regimental Play - lack of imaginative play, lining toys up instead of playing with them Little to no eye contact Little to no displays of amotion Intimidated by loud noises Little to no vercal communication Heavily dependent on daily routine Restricted diet More prevalent in boys Autism is usually diagnosed around 2 years old.

i don't think you have anything to worry about with just that as an example is there anything else bothering you? My nephew is on the autism spectrum all kids with autism are so different so its hard to say no or yes that is or isn't each child is unique.

first I would say if you are concerned then talk to a doctor. But I sure don't think so. If anything that sounds like a very bright child that already understands the concept of sorting based on colors. My daughter did all sorts of things like that when she was a baby and she is tested in the top 99.9% of the Iowa tests now and definitely isn't autistic. I would challenge your son in other ways and see if he understands other concepts as well. But like I said, if you are concerned talk to someone who is an expert in autism. my background is not child development.

Honestly, I don't know much about autism, although I have read a little about it. In my opinion, it just sounds as if he is recognizing that they match, which is a great thing!

Hi Nina Lee..An early sign of Autism begins with speech patterns. Your little one should have developed some pattern speech by now ex: mama, dada, papa, no. Expressions happy, sad, excited when they see a new toy are all normal but lack of expression would raise question. Your pediatrician is the best at answering all of these questions. Before your next appointment begin taking a small diary of behavior patterns you observe on your child and have it ready for your pediatrician at your next appointment. I hope this may be of some help..Good luck

I agree with inked. My oldest daughter was like that with those shapes that you put in the bucket. She would focus on just one shape. She is 6 now and just very anal retentive on how things go and how she cleans and things like that. Maybe your baby will be like that. Really its not that bad. You can always rest assure of a clean organized bedroom.

I agree with Inked mommy as well. If you have concerns, do a little research so you know what to look out for. Most kids are diagnosed before age 3 (most being around 2 years old). They say the earlier you "catch" it...the more helpful therapies can be. That where my dilemma comes in. Tyler won't be diagnosed until January 29th & he's 4. I feel like kicking myself everyday for not noticing it sooner and ignoring other people's comments. It's a $h!tty feeling to know there might be something wrong with your child. Best of luck Nina.

I really think that's he is too young for any kind diagnosis and just one thing isn't going to red flag autism. children aren't usually diagnosed properly until 3 or 4 and if the child shows significant signs then they can diagnose at 2 but don't label him just yet. the place to go for information is autismspeaks.org

Totally off the wall, I read recently while researching the progression and development of infants and toddlers that one of the things babies and toddlers start doing is matching colors and objects by the twos. Sounds like you just have a little genius blooming :) If I find the article I'll send it your way.
