When are kids too old to make Christmas gift lists?
-
My kids are 12 & 14, and still make "wish" lists for Christmas. I'm thinking they are too old for that. It started when they were little, and wrote to Santa with their lists. Of course, they don't still believe in Santa, but they still write the lists. They put tons of stuff, some expensive, some not. My husband & I usually decide on a set $$ amount to spend on each kid, and we choose 5 things each from their lists. One big (expensive) gift, and the rest less expensive. These are things that go under the tree, and does not include what we put in their stockings. I guess I'm really thinking about my 14 yr old (15 end of January), when I wonder if 14 is too old for a list. Actually, even though I've asked and reminded her to give us her list multiple times, she still hasn't. My 12 yr old son has. So, should I just go on with shopping for my daughter and not worry about a list from her, and just surprise her? What do you think?

Answer:
My children are almost the same ages as yours. I ask them for a list knowing that they will have a variety of items on it. I ask them to put "wish" items as well as realistic items. I use it as a guideline when I shop - also for the relatives when they ask what the kids want. I find the pre-teen and teen years to be very difficult in terms of shopping. Many of them are label conscious. Heck - they've also played games that I've never heard of at a friend's house. I also thinks it allows the parent to get them something special that they want with a bit of surprise. My kids will each get one "big surprise" as well as a couple of less expensive gifts. A couple of gifts are items that they need for sports that they already know about -- pads, skates, etc. Your daughter is old enough to ask why she hasn't given you a list. Maybe she'd like to be surprised. Maybe she doesn't know what she'd like. Good luck -- happy holidays!

I'm 28 and still compile a list. If someone wants to buy me gifts, I want to make sure it is something I need or want.

You are never too old to make a list! I am 30 years old and my mother-in-law insists I make a Xmas list for her. That way she knows what I am hoping for and I don't get anything un-useful.

They are never too old for christmas lists! My sister is 29 and I am 25 and we still give our mom a list. Why? Because she asks for one! Christmas is for giving and why not give something you know your children would want? And if they dont give you a list you always have the option of gift cards from their favorite stores so they can pick something out they like. good luck!

everyone of all ages have wish lists , it's nice to get something that you have asked for instead of things you don't want (don't you like things you want?) wish lists are a great tool in shopping and making sure everyone has at least one thing they really want . So why mess with a good thing ....keep your wish list and see some smiles at Christmas

If they didnt make these lists would you know what they want? I am 35 years old with two children ages 13 and 6 months and my father asked me for my wish list as well as my kids wish lists its the only way he knows what to get us for xmas. My nephews and neice ages 13-15-16 also make up the lists as requested so everyone knows what to buy for them. As for your daughter not giving you a list if she hasnt mentioned what she wants she could be difficult to shop for as are my nephews and neices I keep hounding them until they tell me what they want. This year the big thing with my neice is Baby Phat shoes and etnies with my nephews bigger amps for their cars. Im glad my son is still a baby he'll be happy with a box. And my husbands wish list starts and stops at a 800 dollar new Traxxas Nitro car.

never, i'm 27 and still make one, but try to make it a little more imaginative than what i really want (seeing as my tastes have gotten a little more expensive than legos) such as a genie that will grant 3 wishes or a giant shetland pony. it's fun to see what my parents come up with.
