How should I ask for a raise?

Nanny: how to ask for a raise?

  • I am a live in nanny and believe I have gone above and beyond my nanny duties. I stay late or work early with nearly no notice. I signed the child up for and take her to gymboree class. I do necessary grocery shopping. I'm always sure to do the child's laundry when it needs down, baths, and cleaning up after the child. I clean up after their cat (poop and puke, which isn't part of my job) I go above and beyond to make sure the child is safe, feels loved, and is learning everyday. I have been nannying for the family for a little over a year and I did reserve a Christmas bonus but I would really like a raise. Our contract will be up in May and they have asked me stay with them until December. When should I ask for a raise? And how should I ask for a raise? I was thinking about waiting until May, but thought maybe I should bring it up before hand so they know I am wanting a raise.

  • Answer:

I think you should bring it up sooner that you would like a merit increase. Make sure you present your case, as you did here, and know specifically what it is you're looking for. I'd use a question type approach when bringing it up. "How satisfied are you with me as your nanny?" "In your mind, what would merit a salary increase?" Once dialogue has started, then you can talk about it and let them know that you feel that you're deserving of an increase. Have a conversation about it. Be relaxed and stay confident.
