MOM'S...When your in-laws invite you & your husband and kids over for dinner, do you do the dishes/help clean?
-
My husband's birthday was 2 days ago and we went to his parent's house for dinner and cake. My husband's brother and SIL were there with their two kids... I hate my SIL, for the record. There were 14 of us there who ate a steak dinner at the expense of my IL's (which I thought was REALLY nice of them)... After dinner, I went into the kitchen and started rinsing dishes and putting them in the dishwasher, wiping off the table, etc.... My SIL came up to me and said I should stop being a 'kiss-asss' and making her look bad because my MIL "should do her own dishes if she wants company over"... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer:
When I go to my inlaws which is once a week everyone takes there own dishes and rinses them off and puts them in the dishwasher then everyone but me retreats for a smoke and the kiddies play on the deck till they are done. Sometimes I help set the table or my son will help too, I have even gone over to their house and cooked dinner for them. We all do our part and I think your SIL is kinda rude and shouldn't treat her mother like that, hopfully her kids show her the same respect down the road.

Maybe she was never a girl scout? Because I learned to always leave a place cleaner than I found it- which includes helping with dishes when you're invited to dinner.

I see why you hate your SIL. Yes, I do help.I say, if your SIL has a party, make a big **** mess and grin proudly.
I'm not a mom, but having been to many family dinners. No matter whoes house were at everyone helps out cleaning up. That just seems normal to me.

I always try to help wherever I'm invited...whether to in-laws' house, aunts/uncles, etc. You did absolutely the right thing to help. Sounds like your SIL is very jealous of you. She should be the first one in there, with other family right behind. If your MIL was so generous to foot the huge bill for 14, she should be allowed to sit-out the cleaning and relax.

I think you were right to do the dishes and clean. My dad always offers when we go to my mum's mum's and the other way round. If not, I think it's polite to offer!!!

Yes, I do. If I don't help with dishes, I help with putting other things back.

When my family gets together we are very informal. They don't even knock anymore - just walk in. My brother comes over and sleeps on the couch. It's very relaxed and informal. We help do the dishes and pick things up after dinner. I would keep being courteous and bug her to death :)
