How can I play an active role in my godchildren's early development?

  • I am a godmother to eleven children (8 Caucasian and 3 African American children), but since I never had children and am more career-oriented than family-oriented how do I play an active role in their childhood. I am know to them as their "wealthy, eccentric aunt." I want to play a role in their development and education. I don't know what to do. I am their godmother because their parents put enomorous trust in me and know I am very financially well-to-do compared to other 22-year old full-time college students and know that I am very responsible, loving, and caring insomuch that I will provide for children a good life should something happen. Please give me a crash course on Parenting 101. I greatly appreciate any advice immensely. Thank you in advance.

Spend time with them! No need to do anything fancy, just have them over, give their parents a much needed break, and have some things for them to do. Some of my favorites: a big box of all sorts of craft materials (safe ones, of course) or, from the time they are preschoolers, make muffins. It can all be done with one big bowl. Have them sit around the table or even on the kitchen floor. Have the ingredients all measured out into cups- and each one can pour their cup into the big bowl. Then, they can take turns mixing. When the muffins are done they can have some and take a few home for mom and dad. Best wishes! Thanks for caring about children! from a grandma-aged person

Just be there for them, take them to the zoo, maybe give Mom and Dad a break some weekend.

It would depend upon the age of these children. If they're pre-school, you could spend some time with them just talking and relating to them, as a Teacher would in school. This would definitely help because today's children do not have enough exposure to experiences outside their own homes and closed communitiy : then they do not adjust well in school, many times. If they are a little older, you could talk to them about their parents : you'd be surprised how many kids have a problem in associating properly with their parents! If there are any teens.... anything positive you could do while being or talking with them, would be useful, I suppose, as it would show them a picture of the world outside their immediate peer group, which is the 'real world' for them, and the rest is only the 'peripheral world'!
