What are the names for GF foods for gluten-free diet?

How to sneak veggies and new foods into the diet of an adult...?

  • I've been designated the task of cooking for my family 3 days a week, which is fine. I enjoy cooking, and my OT thinks that by cooking my own foods it'll help me slowly start to eat different foods which at presents I can't even put in my mouth. My mum and I eat a lot of fish, we do "meat free Monday" and we're slowly getting new foods into my diet with the help of my OT. But because my dad and brother are so unhealthy is gets quite hard. However, I'm getting SICK of cooking sausages and chicken burgers, normal burgers and chips for my father and brother. So, any tips on how to introduce new foods without them turning their noses up? It's not that they won't eat the foods, it's that if they know what they're eating they refuse. Which I find stupid.

Talk to them about it. They're adults. Explain that the ability to try new foods is a life skill, and that you don't expect them to eat the whole thing but just to try a bite when you prepare it. I honestly don't know what to say other than I'd throw an absolute fit if I prepared a meal, steamed up some lovely cauliflower or something, and my family didn't try a bite of everything. It's such a basic rule in my house. My FIL will eat no other vegetables than corn-peas-carrots mixture. That's it. No cucumbers, no cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, etc. My husband came to me the same way and I told him that I didn't care if he didn't eat all the squash I make, but he needs to try a bite or two. As he tried things, he realized he liked them, and was willing to eat more. He still won't eat brussell sprouts, other than just one bite, but he's discovered so many fruits and vegetables he never thought he'd like that he now likes. Maybe you can make it into a game of a sort. A 'veggie of the week' type thing, cook it up, and then have everyone taste and describe what it tastes like, and guess the veggie, and then decide if it should be cooked up again and how it can be cooked differently. My 4 year old has opened her mouth to more veggies when I say "this tastes... slightly sweet after you chew on it for a while. That's a pleasant cool flavor. Hmm..." She's then curious, tries it, and while she may not eat much more she has just tried it at least. BTW, I like turkey burgers with shredded carrots and avacado on top. It gives a wonderful flavor in my opinion. But my dad would never eat avacado, he says it tastes too fatty, but I was able to get him to try some shredded carrots. His meal of choice though is Hamburger Helper. gah. He looks at what I make for my family and always asks if the kids will actually eat that. I always point out they need to try a bite, and then they can have a banana or something. I also love mixing things like spinach into alfredo sauce for chicken alfredo. :) Something that might also work is to get those microwave steaming bags, let them pick out the veggies, and plan meals around that. Try to encourage variety in their choices.

Serve them raw. From the years I lived in England, one thing I learned was that in general (maybe not you, but maybe you), people over there have a habit of way over-cook vegetables. I love vegetables, but I hate soggy vegetables with no flavour. That's just gross. If you're doing that, I don't blame your brother and dad! If not, eh, raw veg is still better than cooked, in my humble opinion. Raw veg is the best. Raw veg with dip is even better than the best. (The dip isn't exactly healthy, but whatever).

Heavy on the butter -- there are very few cooked vegetables that people won't stuff in when they're drowned in butter. Fat and salt = delicious, even if people don't like admitting it. Take a look at the side dishes on the menus of some better steakhouses, and go from there. Asparagus with Hollandaise, tomato salads, creamed spinach, stuffed mushrooms, etc etc -- those things are staples there for good reasons, and should appeal to the meat-n-potato types.

I mince zucchini, yellow squash, mushroom and bell peppers. I mix them with ground turkey (which I call beef) and a chunky tomato sauce. I serve it over spaghetti. My husband doesn't know that it is full of vegetables. He just thinks he is eating meat sauce. Jessica Seinfeld (Jerry's wife) wrote a cook on hiding vegetables in food.

to the first poster... you lived in england yet you think we ear raw food... riiiiight then lol... I hate people from other countries coming here then thinking they are sooo british because they can cook a roast... no... just no! erm well try pasta bake with sausages, inside then on the cheese on top put sliced tomatoes and onion... it works on my kids lol or you could put tuna inside.. it is pretty quick and simple to make, also try to shop the veggie isle in tesco or asda they do great veggie burgers which you can put with chips and mayo.. jacket potatoes are healthy too.. just make it and tell them if they dont eat it they can have anything else.. if they are going to act like children treat them as such!

ok try this for veggies and other stuff: - veggie thingy that is delicious: get a pan ( large enough not too small not too big but big enough) put butter and then cut onion and put onion in the pan. wait about 1-2 minutes then add carrots, corn ( the ones that come in a can ) , you could put other stuff such as mushrooms, peas or anything but its sooooo good, ( im like 10 - 15 years old and i love it) after that put salt but u dont need to and if u do decide to put salt just a bit....after that, there isn't really a time where it's ''ready'' or ''good'' its just whenever you think its good/ready. you can't really tell that much. and here's a tip ( but its SOOOO TRUE ) tell them that sausages are made out of left over meat and they clean it. sausages aren't only made out of that, but they are made out of ''animal parts'' sounds delicious right? NOPE WRONG animal parts are: intestins, brain, lips, nose, heart, ear..........tell them that, cuz its true and if they knew that i bet they would imediatly stop eating that.....even search it. its been quite a while since i dont eat sausage......maybe a year?? but hamburger is also bad but i dont think its that discusting....but the way they kill the cows...its SOOOO SAD! ): they shockt he cows, cut their heads off, rip off the skin! its discusting and sad ): tell them that, first of all cuz its true, second its good to know, third they will stop eating those stuff. if they dont eat the veggies, make all sorts of meat with veggies on it, just try that well hope i helped and yah...............its so sad and wrong wat they do to the cows! ):
