Parents and texting- How do you feel about texting?
-
After hearing the latest on the news about a certain celebrities texts making it public, I wondered how many people actually will just say anything in a text? I must be on the paranoid side because I wouldn't say anything on a text message to my husband that I didn't want the whole world to see. I think- I could lose my phone, my kids could read my texts- anything. So texting for me is never anything private or personal. Do you send overly private or personal texts? *This isn't a texting debate about whether or not you think texting is *stupid*. I'm deaf and texting plays a big part in the way I use my phone.

Answer:
I'm not really into texting much. Mostly I use it to communicate stuff to my boss about his appointments so no worries about the world reading those.....I guess I'm like you though. If I don't want anyone to know something about me then I'm not gonna leave evidence of it in written form. Ugh the pen is mightier then the sword.

I text a lot but I have my phone set up to delete my texts after a certain number of days. Of course the old adage of "If you don't want anyone to read it, don't write it down" is very true.

i text things that sometimes might be considered personal, but i am not famous so i doubt my texts would be leaked to the media and if i ever lost my phone and a stranger read my texts i could care less what they thought.
I have sent dirty texts to one person...not my SO. I am sure to delete them though from my sent box, and delete any dirty texts I receive as well. And the person I text to I trust 150% because this person needs to hide it from their SO as well. That being said, its not a daily occurance or anything and I wouldn't do this with my child in the room or anything.

It's one of those things that I wouldn't get too personal about. I feel texting and the internet are both things you have to watch what you say, because you can't just "take it back" or delete it.

I agree with you, and I've had talks with my teens about what is and what is NOT okay to send in a text message. They're bright kids. I trust 'em.

I never text, but if I did I would never send anything I would be uncomfortable with other people seeing. I don't send emails that I would be embarrassed for random people to read either, because you never know who is looking over the shoulder of the person you are texting or emailing. My son is no where near old enough for a phone, but when he is we will have the discussion of what is and is not appropriate to text to someone.

I don't send overly private or personal texts, but if for some reason I felt the need, I would erase it from my phone right after and ask the recipient to do the same.

well honestly unless "honey can you pick up milk on the way home from work" is going to make me famous in the media I don't think I have much to worry about. I can't think of anything I've ever said in a text that would be deemed inappropriate and I don't cheat so... *shrug*

I do text sometimes if I am not in a situation where a call is appropriate, like in a bus, to my family in a different time zone to ask them to call when they're awake, or if it is to ask my partner to pick up something at a store at his convenience. I do not like overly personal texts. That is the point of text message, is it not? Impersonal convenience? I do not fear anyone reading my texts, it is not that. I do not even remember the last time I deleted them. It is just that I find it very cold and impersonal and would not wish to put my personal feelings and anything more important than 'ring me when you're awake you lazy ***** :)' or 'we're going for lunch' into a text message. It is not the same as in person, face to face, and it has become too much a substitute and easy way out of personal contact.
