How to open up a pet store?

How can we make our pet store more kid-friendly???

  • Hi~ Hubby & I have a Pet store in Northen Ca. On Jan. 1st of this year Ca. passed a law stating that we can't sell anything ( live or product) to a child under the age of 18 with out their parents physically inside the store. If we do it is a $ 300.00 fine per sale. We can't afford to pay that kind of fine. And now we have to pay an extra $10,000 a month in insureance if we just allow kids under the age of 18 in just too look! My question to you is this. Because of these laws we are wondering how we can make our store more kid friendly??? Any ideas or suggestions??? Thanks for the help! PS~ For you CA. parents who didn't know this. You have to be with them at all times in the pet store. Notes to the store don't count and staying in the car while your son gets a mouse for his snake doesn't count either! You must be with them in the store, no ifs,. buts, mights or maybes about it! Any they can't BUY ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ARE THERE!

    maybe you can make it like sum sort of mini-open-zoo?? where pets like kitten/puppies, put in one place.. and one place u hire a peson so kids can play wif reptiles in one corner -- and then u like- make a membership - if buy from your shop , and lets say- a pair of hamsters, (for example)-- and if they breed, then the kids can sell their litters to your shop, (why not rite?)+ plus you give special charge for veteriner treatment for pets bought from your shop. and.. maybe-- a pet competition?? how bout that?? ;-)

i would personally suggest the you make the all the frontside wall to be see through glass so instead of them going in they could just stand outside and look at the pets..

Valar may have said the magic word. in Bowie county texas it is against the law to sell alcoholic beverages. however a PRIVATE club with memberships was exempt from this law. if you operated a PRIVATE petstore and clients were required to have memberships the laws may change. something to look into and think about.

Get the word out that parents must be with their children.Try posting thing in and on websites of animal shelters,local commercials,take home fliers to nearby schools.have events for famlies!Like animal contest every month.Animals will have to rsvp and be on leash or caged of course.Say you have a Guinnea Pig Pageant or Puppy Parade and give a ribbon for top three animals-Parents see your shop is family oriented and kids have a great time!This would be inexpensive,and word of mouth will hopefully bring in more parents.
