Do name brand and "in" clothes still determine a kid's popularity in school?
-
My daughter is almost to preschool age. I am just wondering if it's still like it was when I was in school (I graduated 6 years ago), do the clothes you wear, the brand and the "in" clothes still determine a kids popularity in school? Has it gotten worse? I remember that when I was in school, if you didn't wear the right clothes, then you were an outcast pretty much. Luckily, I had older cousins who gave me their clothes when they outgrew them and they were all designer labels, and when I turned 15, I started working full time to afford my own clothes. I'm just worried about my daughter not fitting in. I don't want her wardrobe to be the cause of her not having friends in school - I 'm worried because I know that my husband and I could never afford name brand clothes for our kids (walmart & target is more our price range...lol). So parents out there of kids (elementary, junior high) do clothes still determine a child's popularity? Thanks!

Answer:
Its gotten worse, much worse, I teach English, its not pretty, you don't need to worry about it until 3rd or 4th.

did that Yahoo news article catch your attention? even with uniforms in school there is still branding. to say this was to be prevented some school require no matter the income for school badges (school image) to be worn on the shirts. now persons who can't afford this badge get teased. although the uniforms are not suppose to be branded there are parents who will purchase the higher price ones and the kids know and will flaunt that information to the other kids.

Unfortuantely, yes but you can always make her look cute without the price tag and also she's in pre-school it shouldn't matter to her friends-i mean for god sake's they can hardly spell their first names!

I'm in 8th grade and popularity is determined by a lot of things, clothes being one of them, so yes.

Being a high school senior at an all girls school, there is a lot of competition. Brand name clothes are not "in", its just as long as you have the style of clothing. They don't necessarily have to be name brand. Hope that helps! --BriBri

It really doesn't matter until she's older. A preschooler doesn't know brands (if she does, someone has been teaching her). Keep her clean and covered, and let her be. My kids even dressed themselves - and while I didn't care for the combinations, I was pleased that they were making their own choices. By first grade, they're aware of big picture items - everyone else has jeans, or flare pants. My 3rd grader is aware of styles and has requested clothes from one particular store. I buy them a few trendy pieces from the cool stores, and fill in w/ basics from Target et al. I don't want to go broke - but I remember being the only kid without designer jeans. As they've gotten older, I've gone for quality over quantity. They pick a few favorites and wear them over and over, so why not put the money there.

Clothes never did determine popularity, let alone self-worth. A jerk in Hollister is still a jerk. If your kids have to have trendy clothes, let them get jobs and buy them themselves. Target is just fine, and they'll figure that out as soon as they pay their own bills.

LMAO no well you cant dress discustingly, you have to have some sort of style & what not, but it dosnt matter if its name brand & crap. being popular mainly has to do w/ haveing an awesome personality, being fun, & not caring too much about what everyone thinks of you & if you ARE popular only due to your cloths, (which is highly unlikley) you dont want toughs "friends" who have made you popular anyways

Unfortunately, sometimes, yes, it still does. I think nowadays it's not so much the brand name that's sewn onto the clothes...but the style of the clothes. You can get great clothes for cheap prices by going to overstock stores....such as Gabriel Brothers or Rugged Wearhouse (google it...they have a website that gives all locations). I am very picky about my clothes, but I love to go there. Sometimes you have to check the clothes out for damage (some products are factory seconds), but I really have gotten some great deals on designer labels. I don't think you really have to worry about the clothes issue quite yet, because your daughter is still very young. But from my experience, it usually becomes an issue around the 3rd and fourth grade.
