A sign of when a child is able to comprehend toilet training is when they start rolling their step. Heel, toe, heel, toe, not flat, flat, flat. The two developments come from neighboring areas of the brain. Its not an absolute rule but it's a pretty good way to gauge when to start thinking about toilet training. Happy trails.

All my kids potty trained around 2.5 and 3 yrs, after they had been talking and starting to understand what "wet" and "dirty" were.

Not only should you wait for the child to be interested in going potty but also wait until they are able to have some control of their plumbing. If the muscles that they use to control the elimination of their wastes isn't fully developed, (which happens with age) then it would be useless to get serious about potty training.
