How do you know if you have syndrome x?

How many of you Parents actually know what Asperger's Syndrome is?

  • How many of you Parents actually know what Asperger's Syndrome is? what do you know about it. What do you think about it ?

  • Answer:

My fiance has Asperger's, as did his grand father, so there's a good possibility our up coming son will have it as well. Based on personal experience as long as the individual becomes aware they have the disorder everything is fine. However, I have noticed it causes social interaction issues, and difficulty forming meaningful relationships. Prior to me my fiance kept gfs because it was "normal" and not because he had experienced any real emotion for the women. I think if our child ends up with it I'll be careful to teach him that normal is a relative term, and that he should simply be himself. Forcing someone with Asperger's to be like everyone else is ridiculous, and often only makes them more withdrawn. Edit: Reading the other reactions to this question makes me sad. Asperger's is not a form of retardation, nor a handicap. It simply has to do with the way they process emotion. Jesus people look it up. See link in source.

I do. But only because some idiotic teacher decided that my nephew had it. In fact, we later discovered she herself diagnosed 5 kids in the class with it!!!!! After spending thousands of dollars on testing, the specialist said the only thing wrong with him was the teacher's inability to do her job.

it is a mild form of autisim... the person with asperger's is usually quite intellegent but has trouble interacting with others, ie eye contact, saying the wrong thing at the wrong time...

I dont know much about it, but from what i do know it seems that children that have this are highly intelligent, often genius but lack in social interaction.

I'm not even a parent and I know what Asperger's Syndrome is. I had a roommate in college for a year who had it, it's a mild form of autism. Outrageously intelligent, but he had these little quirks and habits that could never be explained by anybody, including himself. He had zero social skills and I didn't like him much for lots of other reasons, so I never really got to know the full extent of his diagnosis and how it affected his life or how he dealt with it.

I only know about it because a relative on my husband's side has it. I can only tell you what I have observed from her and her parents. I feel that any parent who has an asperger's child is very strong and must be extremely patient. A child is hardwork sometimes, but a child with asperger's needs tons of therapy, attention, and direction. Sometimes the little girl I know acts just like a normal little girl, but within 15 minutes she is tearing into something, talking back to her parents, or having a huge tantrum. Some days are just better than others.

I've honestly never heard of it so I don't know what to think about it. I'll do research on it now though.

The little boy that lives across the street from my mother had it. I dont know much I know he is a little different and also he didn't really understand when my mothers boyfriends son was upset. I know this prob is a really bad explanation. He was a sweet boy. he use to get in my car and pretend to drive it and didn't understand why i told him not to. I believe he is 9 now. There isnt anything to think about its like any other handicap. Hes a good kid for the most part and just like any other boy he does things that drive me crazy. EDIT- if you have ever seen boston legal there is a lawyer on there who has it. From what my mother has told me it is a good picture of what some one with it has. It is formed in a comdy way but...
