Isn't it odd to see already made up Easter baskets?
-
When my siblings and I were growing up, my mom (aka "the Easter bunny") would always make our Easter baskets up herself, with candy and other stuff she put together. So whenever I see Easter baskets already made up with enormous toys and stuff and wrapped in cellophane being sold in stores it just seems weird to me. It seems like a way for parents to be lazy. They don't even have to do anything except buy the toy basket and hide it on Easter. They even make already stuffed plastic Easter eggs! Where's the fun in that? I have a 20 month old and I made his Easter basket this year by myself with some M&Ms and little toys he can play with. We're also going to have a Easter egg hunt later on (which my mom and I stuffed ourselves). It's really more fun when you get involved in the making of the Easter festivities, don't you think?

Answer:
You think that's odd? I was at Walmart on Easter eve and there were people buying Easter stuff for their kids with their kids in the cart, they werent babies either, they were like 6 or 7. That is just stupid in my opinion.

So.. you've never purchased something pre-made before? Get over yourself. Making an easter basket doesn't mean you're better than someone who doesn't. You DO realize, don't you, that Easter has NOTHING to do with chocolate bunnies, right?

No it's not weird at all. Throwing some candy and toys in a basket isn't much more work than buyimg a basket with toys and candy already in it, you achieve the same result. Who even cares, it's more important to teach children the real meaning of Easter anyway.

You realize that some people are not particularly creative, or are not buying them for their own children? I always made my own, but premade baskets have been around since I was a child, and that was a long, long time ago. :o)

There are lots of overworked exhausted parents out there. Yes, it's lovely to do it yourself, what's even lovelier is time spent with family and if that means "cutting corners" so be it.

Not just that but everything in the pre-made ones are just cheap dollar store toys. Mine always got made as a kid, and I will always do the same for my daughter. We also fill our eggs. Were having an egg hunt of over 100 hand filled eggs at 1:30.

I always assumed those baskets were used as raffles at random banquets at easter time. There's a local church that has an easter breakfast the saturday before and they have raffles, you see a lot of the pre-made baskets there. Also assumed that some people may buy them for the needy. That cheap little toy in the basket could mean the world to a child that's never been given anything in their lives. The elderly also may enjoy giving their grandkids baskets too but just don't have the mobility that they used to and therefore just can't spend the time to shop around for individual things to put in the baskets. My grandma gave my sister and I the pre-made baskets for precisely that reason. It didn't make us love her any less or feel any less loved by her. I loved the baskets from just as much as the more personalized ones from my parents. I'll make personalized baskets for my kids but that's not 'being involved in easter festivities' to me. That's making a basket. 'Easter festivities' is family and dinner (cooking and eating) and laughter and church. Easter to me was always more about family. My parents never got us any big expensive gifts. Our baskets were mostly candy (and even then it wasn't like the basket exploded with candy) and little cheap toys when we were younger, when we got a little older it was a cd or vhs and the rest was candy. We never went crazy with Easter, that was definitely more of a 'be with family' holiday. I never felt I missed out on anything, even with my pre-made baskets from grandma. It's pretty sad to see what the Easter holiday has been reduced to... :(

I understand the logic behind them in some ways. Making your own basket can add up quickly, for one...it can get expensive depending on what goodies you want to fill it with. I know i spent roughly $30 on my son's alone and it's not even that big of a basket. But i do enjoy making them myself. And not just Easter baskets...i've always enjoyed putting together gift baskets. It's fun and it's more personal.

I know what you mean. I see the made-up ones every year, but I will always make my children's, just as my mom did for me:)

Agreed, I like filling up her basket with stuff I know she likes. The Easter bunny got her a book from her favourite author, an Easter movie and a bright spunky tshirt she Had to wear right away. Her Easter eggs were full of marshmellows and chocolate eggs. She's going around to everyone telling them what the Easter bunny got her. The premade baskets are full of random crap, I don't like buying things that will go to waste. It really doesn't take long either to fill your own basket, its not a 'Martha Stewart' basket but it's full of fun stuff!
