How old must baby be before safe to fly?

  • How old should a baby be before he/she can fly in an airplane? Is there any danger? Do you know what the common practice was in the 1960s? Did airlines in the 1960s allow newborns (example: five days old) on flights?

    I don't know about the 1960's but I know now a days they say you should wait til 5-6 weeks. That way they have had shots... before that they are prone to an infection, or sickness, because planes carry many germs. EDIT: It is possible that he came into the states when he was 5 days old. There is no law that says a baby cannot fly, pediatricians just recommend waiting until they are a little bit older. It is very practicle that this could have happened. We may never know!

Yes and that is what they believe happened. Then Stanley registered his birth in Hawaii since that was also allowed at that time. I wish that INS document would fall into the hands of someone who cares to know the truth.

If you feel the baby is old enough, he/she probably is. Immunization is overrated. If you are flying in the U.S., you need not worry about the shots they give 2 month olds. Just don't feed him/her the airline food!!! (hahaha). The key is giving a pacifier (aka "binky") at takeoff and landing to allow ear popping. A baby that small can't chew gum.

I had to have my babies immunized first before I could get them onto a plane and actually had to show PROOF that I did so!! They were 2 months old and everything went great we put them in these little snugglies and they slept the entire time!!
