What Do I Need To Do To Become Lactation Consultant?

  • Hey Everyone, I am looking for information on how to become a lactation consultant/counselor. I am highly interested in this field & would love to learn more and be able to make a career of it. I just have no clue where to start. I've contact the international board of lactation consultant and yet to hear a reply. I'm located in Florida, is there any training programs to work in the lactation field? I just want to be able to help new moms with breastfeeding since it can be very frustrating and not enough help out there!!! Thanks in advance for your help!

    Becoming a Board Certified Lactation Consultant is very difficult. It's a program invovling several years of training. (The IBCLC website offers details on exactly what's involved.) If you just want to be a 'counselor' .. that's easier. There are no specific requirements ... anyone can hang out a shingle and call herself a 'breastfeeding counselor' or 'lactation consultant.' -- which is why you so often read about REALLY bad advice being given. If you don't have time/money for the full IBCLC program, you might consider becoming a CAPPA certified lactation educator. It's a much simpler program (a 1-2 day training session, several visits to LLL meetings, shadowing a certified LC for a day, and taking a written test). Check out cappa.net for more info.

I have become a breastfeeding helper for the BFN (Breastfeeding network) You have to have about 6 months of training and they on going training every month!! I would contact LLL in USA and ask if they have any course!!

okay im gonna do a dumb answer first and then a real one: 1. know alot about boobies (first thing that came to mind!sorry!) 2. im sure there are nursing school youll have to attend. call your local hospital and ask the Lactation nurse there about it. that would be where id start.
