What was your experience like with your first midwife? did anyone else feel neglected by theirs? NEED ADVICE?
-
The reason im asking this question is because this is my first pregnancy and so far my experience with my midwife hasnt been great and im not sure if anyone else had a problem with theirs? PLZ READ MY STORY thank u When i found out i was pregnant i registered with a hospital and they said they would arrange my first booking appt at the hospital and booked it a week later. the day of my appt i turned up and the antenatal ward was locked and in darkness so i was confused and a bit lost. we eventually found a midwife walking past us and told her the situation. she explained that the antenatal had been canceld and they must have forgoten to advise me (not a good start but mistakes happen). she then appologised and did my appt for me there and booked me in for my first scan in 3 weeks time and said on the day i would need to collect my white notes and they would have them ready for me. The day of my scan i went to collect the notes and they didnt know who i was and didnt have any ready (again not a good start again) eventually had my scan and all was fine and glad to see my baby. i was then booked in for my 22 weeks scan. The day of my second scan and blood test and everything was fine again until the nurse said ok now ur midwife will arrange ur next appts from now so i said ok how do i get one of those? she said u dont have a midwife? i said no no one said anything about a midwife or arranged anyone for me (i assumed u didnt see ur midwife till much later as this was my 1st pregnancy i didnt know) she gave me a number of a local midwife centre. I had to phone them 3 times until someone called me back and made me an appt to meet my midwife. At this point i was now 26 weeks and still hadnt even seen my midwife yet. I am now 36 nearlly 37 weeks pregnant i have only seen my midwife in all about 4 times and im in and out in 5 mins she jus checks my blood pressure, urine and babys heartbeat all very quickly and then says see u in 3 weeks. when i looked in my white notes she ticks stuff that she says shes discussed like diet, wellbeing and risks and she doesnt? i now havent seen her in 5 weeks as i had an appt booked 5 weeks ago an had to cancel as i was feeling really unwell. they didnt seem to care or want to know what was wrong with me. and she never phoned me to see if i was ok. i tried rebooking an appt with her and have left several msgs for her and have been told she will call me this has been going on for 4 weeks now and she hasnt contacted me. like i said this is my 1st pregnancy and she never told me about antenaltal classes until a friend told me and i tried booking them myself to be told it was to late now. i still have no birthplan and have had to rely on the internet for alot of my information. I just feel i have been neglected by her and for my 1st pregnancy should have been guided a little better. i was always under the impression u are ment to have a close relationship/bond with ur midwife and i dont know mine at all. i really need some advice about this and what people think about this?? thank u so much for ur time x

Answer:
Okay so your definatly right on being neglected. Usually the purpose of the midwife is so you feel comfortable but not in a hospital type setting. I wouldnt suggest using her annymore. You should proably go to your family doctor and let him/ her hook you up with a midwife is your still planning to go that route. If not go to a different hospital and explain your situation I really hope things get better for you and congradulations and good luck with your baby x

It is never too late to switch or change midwives. If I was you and you feel totally uncomfortable, try switching to a different doctor. I know many women who have switched doctors just a few weeks or even a week before giving birth. It is owed to you, that you and your baby feel and comfortable with your midwives. I would call in tomorrow and request someone else. Or can you go to a different hospital all together? I have been pretty close and very comfortable with my doctors, never had a problem. They have been pretty thorough with me and make me feel comfortable as well. Which you should be also.

Are you in the states? I'm in Canada and unless we actively seek out a midwife we are referred to a group of obgyns. We see them once every couple of weeks until around our 30th week, then every week until birth. Whichever obgyn is on shift at the hospital at the time of birth is who delivers your baby. The appointments were very brief as you described yours to be. No urine sample though. Just blood pressure, check fetal heartbeat, weight and ask how we are doing. I never saw the same doctor twice. I didn't love this experience, but it was efficient and I never felt ignored or neglected. I'm on my second pregnancy. I chose to find a midwife this time around. Actually I'd wanted one for the last pregnancy, but waited too long to find one and they were all full. I had a bit of trouble arranging one this time because I found out about my pregnancy right before xmas and people are, of course, on holidays around that time. Anyways, I did manage to arrange one, yay! They have a very easy online booking system. They also send email notifications to set up appointments for special things like birth preparedness classes. I've only had one appointment with my midwife so far, but it lasted about 30 minuted, was very thorough and I never felt rushed. From what I understand most appointments last about 30 minutes once a month until I am farther along. So, that's the rundown on how things work in my neck of the woods. If you are from a different country, I'm not sure how things are supposed to work. It sounds from your question like you automatically go through a midwife rather than an obgyn. Either way, you should be receiving better care than you have described. Try calling and seeing if you can talk to someone in charge. Talk to them calmly about your concerns. Hopefully it will get better.
